Pram issues

Basically DS has a fit every time we try and use the pram, I get about 10 mins out of him if I’m lucky and then he’s screaming. We have a carrier but due to back issues from pregnancy and birth I can’t use it for long periods or I’m in pain, DS is a big boy! How can I get him to overcome this pram thing? Anyone been through similar and their baby stopped making trips out miserable? Very sad Mummy!

Due you happen to have a travel system? Our DS always hated the basinet, but was very content going for walks with the car seat attached to the pram base. Just something that's maybe worth trying, although some babies just grow out of their dislike of the pram.

Thanks for replying, it can be a bassinet or a pram seat but no car seat attachment. It doesn’t seem to matter which setting I have it on. I hope he does grow out of it as it’s making things really difficult but if there’s anyway I can help him I will.

Hi OP. I had exactly the same with DS. He absolutely hated the pram we had. Screamed and screamed until he was hysterical and almost sick. We had quite an old second hand pram and we were using the car seat mainly as the travel system. When he was 6 months we decided to bite the bullet and get him a new pushchair. We went in and tried him in them first. He seemed really comfy and happy. He hasn't looked back since and loved it. So it may well be baby is uncomfortable. Or may just grow out of it like mine did. Have you tried them facing you and also facing outwards? Some babies prefer one or the other.

Hi, yes I was thinking about getting a new one but I’m a bit loathe to spend the money in case it’s exactly the same with the new one! He’d be fine trying them in a shop for a couple of minutes but using one for going out would probably be a different story!

DS hated the pram too, particularly the carry cot. We put him in the seat which helped a bit but he still wouldn't go to sleep in it, he would be OK until he got tired, and then he would just scream. He grew out of it around 7 months. How old is your DS?

BlueMoon1103 · 04/08/2019 07:33

DS is almost 5 months.

Mine hated the bassinet and I moved her into a sitting up position just under 6 months. That helped massively as she could see me properly

Mine hated the pram. She was marginally better when I moved her to the seat bit and world facing. She was a very nosy baby who wanted to see what was going on at all times and wanted to be vertical (silent reflux). She basically lived in a carrier outward facing until about 9 months old.

My DS preferred a standard buggy forward facing. I just put him in, there was already a head support in with it as it was suitable from birth onwards, laid him down a little but not too much so he can still see and so he doesn't slump side to side (he was still not sitting at this point) and he absolutely loved it. My biggest regret was wasting money on a travel system!

Have you visited a sling library? Lots of people with back problems are able to carry comfortably with a well-fitting ergonomic carrier (not usually one you can buy on the high street).

Mine hated pram, he's now 16 months and I thought once he was old enough for a pushchair it would be fine. It wasn't he hated that too. Both forward and rear facing at any angle he had a meltdown. People told me just to let him cry but he'd go bright red and hold his breath. Only thing that worked for me was a carrier, sorry I can't be more help but you have my sympathy. Now at 16 months he will tolerate the pushchair for about 20 mins

Steerpike902 · 04/08/2019 11:27

Mine hated the buggy and wanted to be carried or when he was walking he wanted to walk. Now he's 3 and lazy about walking and we've had to get a double as he was jealous of the baby getting pushed around and wouldn't use a buggy board. It's funny how it all changes.
Maybe get a different baby carrier. I had the ergo baby and it was great and back carry when he's able. Mine second is 6 months and 10kg and in 9-12 months clothes, so facing out or back carry is great but they need very good head control for that.

Have you tried facing him out for the buggy so he can look at everything better? That might help.

I think he’ll probably grow out of it op. My dc1 was the same and she lived in a sling! So she preferred the upright seat not bassinet but when I went out I just took sling as a back up. But eventually she was fine with the pram. I wouldn’t bother with a new pram. I think sometimes they just want to be held that’s all.
