8 month old tantrums

My little boy has just started having tantrums esp at bedtime, he keeps waking every 2 hours wanting me to pick him up, this evening I left him to cry and have a full blown tantrum and after 20 mins he went to sleep, do u think this is a phase that will pass? I hated leaving him crying but I go back to work soon and will need some sleep otherwise I will lose my mind.

I'm not sure that at 8 months old it'd helpful to see crying as a "tantrum" he's still a baby and is crying because he needs something. Could you try to work out what that is? Sleep training (if different types) is an option, but try to do it gently so that your ds knows you're still there for him.

@bernietaupinspen wow , that was harsh!

OP, at 8 months these really are not tantrums. Developmentally, babies of that age are going through a lot - they might be learning to crawl or even walk - and they are probably teething too. What your baby is looking for is some comfort from you - they are not "acting up" or "being naughty".

I sleep trained both my babies, but I did it in a very gentle way and I can tell you more about this if you would like. What you did by leaving your baby is called "crying it out" - this is a very controversial method of sleep training on MN and you will probably get some hostile responses for that reason. I would never judge one method over the other but I do think you need to reset your thinking a bit on why your baby is crying.

Sounds like the 8 month sleep regression. Perfectly normal step in development, it's not a tantrum. He's needs comforting, not to be left to cry himself to sleep.

My DS had horrendous sleep regressions, we were up 5-6 times in a night and they lasted for months. I used to go to bed early and nap when I could.

Posts like these really piss me off! If you have a child, I think the least that can be expected from you is to educate yourself about the simple basics. Saying a baby(!) is having a tantrum is just beyond stupid. And leaving it to cry itself to sleep for 20 minutes is just cruel.
