Baby sick when lying flat

Mrsmummy90 · 02/08/2019 16:51

My dd is 3 days old and bf.
after each feed, I burp her and she's fine if being held but as soon as I lie her down, she starts sicking up and it comes out of her nose as well.

Any ideas?

Is it a little or a lot?
Is she just positing? That's completely normal and will get better on its own.

Your midwife will visit again in a couple of days won't she? Check with her and she can reassure you.

Is baby having plenty of wet and dirty nappies?

newmomof1 · 02/08/2019 16:59

Congratulations btw!

Mrsmummy90 · 02/08/2019 17:03

Sometimes it little bits and sometimes it's a moderate amount but never loads.

I'm seeing her again either tomorrow or Sunday so will definitely ask.
I've been reading that it might be reflux but apparently that normally starts at around 3 weeks so maybe her tummy is just really small still?

Is it just milk or is there clear liquid in there too? All 3 of mine had reflux and that was what they did, leaning the crib so they're not flat helped until they got diagnosed.

It could just be posseting which doesn't indicate anything else, just wee ones throwing up extra milk they can't fit in.

Mrsmummy90 · 02/08/2019 17:07

It's yellow. My milk only just came in so I'm guessing it's colostrum

Ah ok, aye I'd go with asking the MW next time she's out.

And congratulations on your wee lass Flowers

Mine is the same, it was very hard as she wouldn't sleep unless held. Dp and I took it in turns and had 3/4 hours each. It was reflux but as she was gaining weight well, I had to just put up with it because the dr said giving medication to such a young baby can cause more problems than it solves. The gp/hv advice was that it should get better after around 12 weeks, a bit after that maybe 13/4 weeks she started laying down in a cot with a towel under the mattress on the head side. She still is sick/possetts a few times a day but she sleeps really well now.

KayDog · 02/08/2019 17:21

Maybe take a pic of it when it happens too so the midwife can see amount and colour etc gross but may be a good idea!

Cutesbabasmummy · 02/08/2019 20:54

My son was like this. It transpired he had severe reflux and ended up with ranitidine and thickened formula.

Mrsmummy90 · 02/08/2019 23:42

I'm hoping the midwife will be able to give suggestions on how to improve things. Would prefer her not to be medicated while so tiny but I understand she may have to be if there is a problem.
Thanks guys x

Was she born by c section?

CeeCee88 · 03/08/2019 04:24

Could be mucus if yellow. That's what mine had the first few days (but he was a c section baby).

He also has bad reflux, which started later on and was put on gavisxon. Unfortunately all that did was make him constipated, so he went from crying when on his back to crying when needing to poo for hours beforehand.

He's now been put onto Ranitidine, which seems to be helping a tad. I still need to hold him upright for 30 minutes after each feed though.

Apparently they grow out of it by the time they're 3/4 months old though.

Is she distressed when she's sick? If not, it's not too bad as babies are programmed as such to either swallow or spit out sick. She'll never choke on it. :)

HoppingPavlova · 03/08/2019 04:58

Reflux

Mrsmummy90 · 03/08/2019 08:37

She was born vaginally.

She's not distressed when being sick which is good. She'll only sleep with me though and constantly wants to be held so we co slept last night which is something I didn't want to do.

At 3 days old she will want to be held. All she's known is the comfort of your womb and this is all strange and new to her. Hang in there - it gets better xx

CmdrCressidaDuck · 03/08/2019 10:34

If the vomiting doesn't bother her or make her cry it's really nothing to worry about. They often throw up mucus quite a bit in the first week.

Normal for them to only settle on a person as well, they're programmed that way.

Congratulations Grin

Justajot · 03/08/2019 10:34

My second was like that, so we didn't lie her flat until about an hour after each feed.

MoreSlidingDoors · 03/08/2019 10:36

Totally normal. Read up on the 4th trimester. Ideally she should still be inside you.

Lauren83 · 03/08/2019 10:38

Mines had this since birth and has been diagnosed with reflux, he was on ranitidine and now gaviscon, he couldn't keep breast milk down but can thickened formula

Pinkiii · 03/08/2019 11:48

Sounds like reflux.

My DD used to do that, Do you keep her up after you feed her and if so how long for? I found it helped her if i kept her up or lying on me in an up position for 20/30 mins helped a lot.

It started to ease around 4 months
