What on earth to do with DD hair?

Hi - I posted this on AIBU this morning but didn’t get any responses so I’m hoping someone may be able to help here.

My DD has semi curly hair (best pic I could get above). I say semi because the underneath is ringlets but the top layer is virtually completely straight. I have straight hair and so have no idea the best way to look after her hair.

It’s quite fine but she has a lot of it and it tends to frizz, especially when I brush it. I don’t wash it too often and tend to use a lot of conditioner. We rarely blow dry it and let it dry naturally.

Would it be worth fully following the Curly Girl method I’ve heard a lot about? Is it curly ‘enough’ for this to help? Most days I’m at a loss for what to do with it and it just goes up in a ponytail. If it’s left down it just looks crazy!

How old is she and does she mind having it combed? It looks lovely but I must admit I tend towards short hair for young children so that they aren't put through the combing and styling palaver and also so that they aren't subconsciously starting down the girls need to look pretty route.

Sorry posted a bit quickly, v close friend of hours with similar did the wide toothed comb and conditioner +++ but did use pony tail when playing with children for fear of nits!

My daughters is very similar, we damp it, use a tangle teaser, then a wide tooth comb so the curls ping back.
At the back it goes frizzy where she lays on it, my hairdresser said we could use a spritz of leave in conditioner on that part to help with dryness.
She has shorter bits at the front so i clip those back so it looks like a half up half down style, if i dont they stick out everywhere :-D

My daughter has the same kind of hair and I just wet it a little in a morning and when it's dried it is mostly curly.

Thanks for responses! I think I’ll look into getting a proper brush and try dampening it a bit. @yikesanotherbooboo - she’s four and it comes to just below her shoulders. I’ve asked her if she wants it shorter but unfortunately she’s heavily into her princess phase and says she wants really long hair like Rapunzel!

Ha ! Rapunzel it is then!!

Look on Facebook. There's a page called Wavies UK Following the Curly Girl Method.

TokenGinger · 31/07/2019 15:49

Don't brush wavy or curly hair. Wide tooth comb when it has conditioner on only, otherwise it frizzes.

Wineandpyjamas · 31/07/2019 16:25

Thanks for the info @TokenGinger - will definitely check out the fb page Smile

Oh God, don't go down this route. My mother thought that and I'm still bitter decades later. I think you should grow it as it needs more length to add weight which will help imo.

Definitely check out the Curly Girl method. As well as the group mentioned above, there's fb groups for children following the method. Something like Little CGs.

I'd agree with a pp that growing it longer would help. My dd's is similar and the weight of it now longer means it's easier to deal with. She's also 4 and likes it down most of the time (although will have to be tied up for school in Sept, school rule to avoid nits). It's now half way down her back. When she was younger I'd dampen the curly bits after brushing and they'd spring back in to shape. Although she's had a whole new 'layer' of growth in at the front which is much shorter curly and wispy which drives her mad!

I was always made to have shorter hair as a kid and am also still a bit bitter about it, have had long hair all my adult life!
