Formula feeding help

Hi, I am introducing formula to my 7 month old DS and am so confused. The nursery he will be going to has asked for the amount of water required in the bottle and the required amount of formula separately. They will the keepnthe bottle in the fridge and add the formula when needed.

I have bought Tommy tippee formula dispensers and the instructions on there also say to make up the bottle with the required amount of cooled boiled water and then add the formula to the cool water when needed.

Is this OK to do? I thought the formula had to be made with hot water and I have no idea what to do now?

They are wrong. The formula must be made with hot water. They could make it home made prep style by doing 50% hot water and swirling well and then adding 50% cooked water so it’s at the right temperature.

I agree with pp, the powder needs to be sterilised with boiling water... The water is not the part that needs to be sterilised so using cooled boiled water is not going to do the trick. If the nursery are against measuring the boiling water themselves (not sure why that would be a problem though!) you could make the bottles up in the morning, then cool quickly (eg in running cold water or iced water), then transport to the nursery in a cool bag and store at the back of their fridge.

You can buy ready made cartons.
Yes they are a bit more expensive but at least they are made correctly.
Its only for a short time in the grand scheme of things.

Yep, they’re doing it wrong. I wouldn’t have been happy with my DC drinking that on a regular basis.

This is wrong and dangerous. You have three options:

  1. The make the bottle up properly as per the instructions on the box (can't blame them for not wanting to do this it's a pain)
  1. You buy ready to feeds for nursery (easiest and safest, it's what we did)
  1. Follow the WHO code for childcare settings which is that you make the whole bottle up correctly at home (so near-boiling water with the formula etc, cool it quickly at the back of the fridge and then take it to nursery chilled and they warm when needed. It can be kept for 24 hours this way). Here is the WHO link if you need it www.who.int/foodsafety/publications/powdered-infant-formula/en/

DS2's nursery use a Tommy Teepee Perfect Prep machine so we send in the powder only and they add water via the machine. Is it possible they are doing this at your nursery, rather than just adding powder to cold water?
