Do I need a foam floor mat?

Okay, I appreciate this may sound really stupid...but how necessary is it to have a foam play mat for my 6mo?

His nursery is carpeted, so nice and soft floor already. And in the living room I currently put a thick blanket down on top of the rug.

He's rolling tons now and I'm considering buying a big floor mat that would basically go over the rug to make it more cushioned. But if he's going to start crawling soon (he seems soo close) - won't he just crawl off it and be on the floor anyways??

No need, you wouldn’t keep him on it once he’s crawling anyway. I had some of those foam tiles that can be easily stored for the end of our kitchen diner as it was wooden floor, but only while she was sitting and playing. Didn’t bother anywhere we had rugs.

Wooden floors here and it never stopped my DS from being a champion crawler. He was unbelievably fast! They always fall over on the unprotected bit anyway imo. We had some foam tiles in the dining room where we don't have a rug so he had somewhere some comfy to sit and play on but he used to spend all day lifting then up and taking them apart.

Cool thanks! That's what I was thinking, but wasn't sure I was missing something obvious!!

I wouldn’t bother. I didn’t have them with either of mine and they were fine.

No. With DC1 I did have some of those big foam tiles that connect together but she stayed on them for all of thirty seconds and ended up on the hard floor anyway.
Plus I seem to remember something about them not being good for babies to chew, which she did repeatedly Hmm so I stopped using them.
My other three just had to take their chances on the wood and slate floors!!!
