How are you keeping babies room cool in this heat?

I have the windows open with the blinds down. 2 fans going. A wet/cold towel hanging in front of one fan. The GroEgg still says it's 29.2 in here!

DS is only 6 months, so paranoid about SIDS in this heat but don't know what else to try!!

Windows should be shut in the day when it's hotter out than in - you're letting all the heat in. Shut them until it cools down.

Other than that no idea, DS's room is 26!

GooglingThrough · 24/07/2019 15:09

I thought some breeze would be better than nothing...but will try!

I'm sitting in his room while he naps...which I know is adding some more heat in the room, but I'm too paranoid to leave! 😱

I was exactly the same in the summer of 03 with my DS. Apparently the hottest day in the UK ever was in Aug 03. It was super hot for months. He was born in the June and I was so stressed. We didn't have Gro-Egg? But did have a room thermometer that was rarely below 32 for weeks. I totally feel your stress.

He's now 16, 6ft 4in and our with mates drinking beer today!!! So today I'm super stressed about him being out in London drinking!!!

We worry all the time, but the sheer fact you know the temp in his room and are trying to keep him cool makes you a super caring Mum and he will be fine.

Good luck.

@DogsandBoysmeanMud
Thanks so much for that...actually just made me cry. Didn't realise how much I needed that!

I would advise putting the thermometer away,it doesn't help knowing how hot it is it just makes you more anxious. All you need to know is that it's bastard hot!Wink

Can you and baby sleep downstairs if you're in a house? Probably cooler.

Ds was born in 2001 and it was BOILING, he lived in vests and a nappy and a sheet over him at night.

Keep windows and curtains drawn when the sun is shining on them, open up later on in the evening.

bitchfromhell · 24/07/2019 15:35

My ds is currently napping naked under a fan. Tonight I'll try and do the same but as he prefers co sleeping atm I have to say it's worried me a bit.
He's also sipping water quite frequently but at 6 months I apparently have to limit that too?! Seems crazy in this weather.

MummyOfTwo92 · 24/07/2019 15:39

We have black out blinds and I've kept mine closed all day. It's warm but not roasting, I think it's quite cool compared to outside BUT we do have single glazed windows and no insulation in the roof so that may add to it to. More thunderstorms and rain due on a night over the next two days here so hoping tomorrow isn't as hot as it's meant to be!

LoafOfSellotape · 24/07/2019 15:43

Today has been as hit as predicted BUT felt much more bearable as we have a lovely wind.

LoafOfSellotape · 24/07/2019 15:43

**hot

Skyejuly · 24/07/2019 15:45

Can he sleep downstairs? Mine are sleeping downstairs with me atm x

GooglingThrough · 24/07/2019 16:39

Thanks all. My bedroom seems to be the coolest room in the house, since the sun doesn't get it in the afternoon. The travel cot is getting put up in there for tonight...hopefully that helps!

Fingers crossed for some storms to clear it out tonight!

Keep windows open all night if it’s safe to do so. Then shut by 8am and draw curtains. This is what they do in Southern Europe. And they even keep shutters shut in day. This way you keep indoor temperature well below that of the outside.

surreygirl1987 · 24/07/2019 18:57

I have no answers but I sympathise! My 9 month old's room is also 29+ degrees at the mo and I have no idea what to do about it so he's in his cot in his nappy and will have to just sleep in the heat. Poor things. I'm just thankful I don't have a newborn right now. My boy was born in October but my friend had a baby 2 weeks ago and is freaking out about the heat...

Skyejuly · 24/07/2019 19:01

We always have ours sleep downstairs with us when it's hot. I sleep on sofa. So much cooler

Bjones123 · 24/07/2019 22:12

We bought a portable air con unit last year and I'm grateful of it now I have a 4.5 week old baby. It guzzles electric and is super noisy but at least it is cool!

GooglingThrough · 24/07/2019 22:17

We've packed up and are camping out at MIL's house with air con....I'll be here until further notice 😂

Ah good old MIL! They do come up trumps sometimes! Smile

Can I come? Grin

ArrabellaAM · 25/07/2019 07:37

The heat is causing me major anxiety! I've got a 2 month old and luckily we bought an air cooler unit the other day cause I knew I'd be worrying! I try to remind myself babies in hot countries cope but it doesnt always work!

DogsandBoysmeanMud · 25/07/2019 08:56

Hope you all had a good night. Hot sunny day today then it should all be back to normal. You will be home before you know it. Good luck.

Given my 5 month old a cool, damp muslin. Not enough to make her damp, but it’s pretty cool. We have sleeveless vests for her to sleep in, plus I’ve been cooling her room down before she goes to bed with an empty squash bottle frozen with water in, placed in front of a fan.

Lucille21 · 25/07/2019 19:41

Just using the ice infront of a fan method here too. My DD was born last spring and we had a very long hot summer. I just thought, well people have babies abroad and they're fine. Mine slept in a nappy most of the time with a sheet to cover when needed. Tonight she will sleep in the same, but the trouble now is her waking when the sheet comes off due to her fidgeting all over her cot!

Leleophants · 25/07/2019 21:46

Turn off all lights and switches, curtains closed

Minai · 25/07/2019 22:41

I’ve had the windows shut, curtains shut all day and my son’s rooms are still 30 and 31 degrees. I am so stressed. My little one is only 7 months. I have postnatal anxiety and stuff like this gets me really stressed. I’m hoping it cools down a lot overnight. They are both just asleep in nappies so not much more I can do but they were both so hot and sweaty in their cots earlier.

Minai · 25/07/2019 22:42

Oh and I have a fan on in the baby’s room with a bottle of ice next to it but it has done nothing to bring the temp down so far
