Sun cream stronger than 50spf?

My sun burns super super easily. Last year we went to Europe and he burnt through regularly re applied spf 50.
He's 8, so can't keep him sitting in the shade all day easily. And he wants to be in the pool / sea the whole time.

Any suggestions for sun cream that will help him not burn?

You can get factor 60 but factor 50 is total sunblock. Anything above that and you're paying a premium for nothing. You don't get any extra coverage.

My eldest is, in her words, 'basically a vampire'. She burns if she squints at the sun for a second. We use P20 once a day but apply it hourly. I suspect that is what is going wrong. You're not reapplying often enough. With P20 DD can stay in the sun for a few hours without burning.

The factor is the length of time you can stay out in the sun with suncream vs without rather than how much sun it blocks. So if you burn in a second without suncream you can stay in the sun for fifty seconds with factor fifty.

Get him an spf vest.

You need to reapply it more often, and make sure it is in date.

SPF 50 UVA protection 5* apply it regularly, can you not get him a protective suit in his size to x

Sianlouise432 · 23/07/2019 13:27

Make sure there's 5 stars UVA rating as well as being a high spf. UVB rays can burn skin but UVA rays can penetrate deeper layers of skin.

I burn very, very easily. If I went on a sunny holiday, I'd wear long sleeved and legged UV rated top and leggings, then P20 spf 50 (you must apply to really clean, dry skin and leave to dry for 10 mins before going out - so ideally apply to face/neck/ears/hands/feet after a morning shower and then leave getting dressed for 10 mins.
Decathlon do UV clothing at v reasonable prices, and surf hats so they stay on in the sea

By the Boots own brand (Soltan) as it’s the most effective in terms of UV protection. Apply so there is a visible layer on the skin, and keep reapplying every 1-2 hours. Don’t use sprays as less effective - use creams and apply them directly onto his skin (rather than your hands) before rubbing it in.

Buy him an SPF bathing suit with full shirt and bermuda length shorts. Total protection and you do not need to faff around with sun cream.

Tentomidnight · 23/07/2019 13:33

Use an spf suit and a hat as well as spf50 suncream. Reapply the suncream every hour.

Allow him in the pool and the sea in the mornings and late afternoons only. Lunch and then a couple of hours siesta in the shade in the middle of the day.

Have a great holiday.

You shouldn't burn with factor 50 on, it just needs reapplying.

In water it will wash off even quicker so apply more frequently.

However there really is no way to avoid burning easily if you choose to be outside in midday sun and burn easily. An 8 year old should be able to avoid the peak heat.

I would buy him a rash vest for swimming, 12- 4pm not swimming, and when he does swim reaply suncream every 45 mins on skin, reapply every 2 hrs if not in the water and in sun. Decent coverage hat also.

My eldest has always been sensitive with the sun. Dermatologists have said that she has type 1 sensitive skin. She can wear the most effective sun cream and still burn in minutes. The consultants say that shade is the most appropriate form of sun safety.
Sadly this means we have never been able to do "summer holidays". We just adapt our lifestyles- we go to the beach in the evenings when the sun is not so strong. It's frustraing for her and the family- but the only way to keep her skin safe.

BikeRunSki · 24/07/2019 09:42

DS has inherited my dad’s “thin ginger skin”. We use Boots Soltan factor 50 and a UV suit.

mindutopia · 24/07/2019 09:43

Make sure you are buying a decent suncream with both UVA and UVB protection. Some of the cheaper own brand ones are rubbish for offering full spectrum protection (I think the Lidl or Aldi brand - I can't remember which - last year only offered UVA and no UVB protection at all). Make sure it's waterproof and apply hourly. And then just do outdoors/beach things in morning and late afternoon and save more shaded indoor activities for the height of the day.

meditrina · 24/07/2019 09:46

Getting a close weave UV- accredited rash vest and long jammers will help, as will a hat.

If he wants to be active, I suggest taking him out early and exhausting him for a few hours by about 11, then having lunch/siesta (which you will need too!) before loosing him into the wild again at 3ish
