What do you add to your porridge?

DD2 is one in 2 weeks. I need some ideas what I can add to her porridge, sometimes I mash up the odd banana. What else can I add?

Stewed fruit eg apple.

WanderingTrolley1 · 20/07/2019 10:26

Honey.

My DD loved plain porridge as a baby and I thought I'd try making it a bit more interesting by adding stewed apple, cinnamon, banana etc.He hated it! I learned my lesson, left it plain and she still eats it like that now as a teenager.
SO...I'd just leave it!

I buy those puréed fruit pots and add half. Probably cheaper to make it yourself though.

Sooverthemill · 20/07/2019 10:40

Ah for me: brown sugar, butter, cream

When I gave it to little knew, banana, stewed fruit ( apple, pear, berries) cooked figs

Ricekrispie22 · 20/07/2019 11:06

Desiccated coconut and chunks of mango. I use prepared frozen mango chunks. Not only does it save me from having to peel and cut the mango off the stone, but it cools the porridge down to eating temperature quickly without it turning into cement.
Peanut butter
Teaspoon of ground almonds and a handful of raspberries
Tinned peach slices
A dessert spoonful of sultanas
Petit filous - I stir in a mini pot of petit filous straight out of the fridge to cool down the porridge quickly if we’re in a rush.

I buy frozen raspberrys crush them up and put them in while cooking.

RainOrSun · 20/07/2019 11:20

Frozen berries stirred through. They cool it down!

I cook it only with water and usually add amaranth pops and then something rich in Vitamin C - some fruit, berries or a little bit of orange juice or a squeeze of lemon. Occasionally I add some seeds and when he was younger I'd sometimes add some pureed nuts as well (now he eats them whole).

Frozen blueberries/raspberries/blackcurrents
I make fruit puree and freeze it in ice cube trays. When making porridge I put a couple of these ice cubes in after its cooked. Flavours it and cools it down nicely.
Cinnamon or ginger

If you cook it in a saucepan, add grated apple halfway through (if using real rolled oats not quick cook stuff). Tastes delicious. Sultanas and brown sugar are good too.

Some great ideas thanks for these. Completely forgot about stewed apple & frozen fruit! Honey is a good one too, I can’t give that to her until she is one though can I? Would it hurt giving it to her now - she is one in 2 weeks?

Frozen berries. I buy them in a big bag from Asda and make it it coconut milk. Delicious.

Leftielefterson · 20/07/2019 20:03

Nut butter (I use brands that are 100% nuts)
Grated apple/carrots
Sultanas
Raspberries
Banana
Any fruit really

I’ve also started adding milled seeds (chia and flax) to my DD porridge as they are packed with goodness and she doesn’t even realise she’s eating them.

I like porridge with a dollop of butter, I actually fancy that now instead of my actual dinner.

BarberBabyBubbles · 20/07/2019 20:29

Grated apple, raisins and cinnamon! 😋

isshoes · 21/07/2019 10:10

Grated carrot and courgette with a spoonful of peanut butter. A friend told me about it and I was skeptical, but it’s surprisingly nice and a good way to get hidden veg in.

Theoldwoman · 21/07/2019 10:12

Usually frozen berries or sliced banana

archsun · 21/07/2019 10:59

A little bit of peanut or nut butter
