Probiotic stopped the poopy nappies???

DS (7 weeks) was extremely windy accompanied with reflux. I've started trying out Optibac 4 days ago. It did seem to help and he's a lot easier and calmer in general.

However, yesterday, all a sudden he stopped producing poopy nappies. He usually pooped on each single nappy, mostly brought out by fart and sometimes it just got squeezed out (sorry for being so vivid!) when he cries. There are usually at least 2 very big nappies. Yesterday there was none!

The entire day (till this moment) I've been very anxious to wait for the big poopy nappy. But got nothing!

I kinda guess this is due to Optibac. Anyone has had similar experience? Can I carry on with Optibac?

Bf or ff?

Badabingbadabum · 20/07/2019 11:10

If bf, its around that time that they can stop pooing for a few days. With my two dds, it was always quite a parenting experience when the poo finally did come out

Yes my DD also stopped pooing around that time (no probiotics). She was EBF and could go up to 5 days with no poo. I used to help things along with tummy massage and lifting her legs to chest. And yes the poos were enormous when they finally arrived! She went back to more regular poos around 9 weeks I think.

Thank you! Good to know it's probably nothing to do with probiotics. But the doctor raised some eyebrows when I mentioned having given probiotics to DS. DH also suggests that I shouldn't"interfere" his gut flora environment. So I stopped giving him!

Now I know I need to keep with the nappy changing for eventually "contain" that moment of enormous poo! LOL~

I ordered finally thought you were taking the probiotics, but your later post sounds like you gave them to the baby?

Don't give them to the baby!

I think most people would presume that you were taking the probiotic so that your very young baby would get the benefits in your breast milk. He’s really too young to be given anything other than milk at the moment (unless prescribed by a paediatrician, obv.)

minipie · 20/07/2019 21:33

Oh FGS put down the pitchforks people. Optibac is formulated specifically for babies from birth. I would give it if for example my baby had had antibiotics directly or via me and so needed their gut flora replenishing.

Babies are given all sorts of things not prescribed by paediatricians, eg Infacol which is basically plastic plus E numbers. Optibac is no different, it is a product made for babies (and frankly is rather more natural than Infacol).

BingBo · 21/07/2019 01:15

Thank you, minipie.

That's right. I did do my research and Optibac is suitable for from birth and it's received tons of approvals from who has used them with their babies.

And it took me a few weeks hesitation, until I couldn't bare more seeing the little one struggle with wind and reflux and pain. I've done my research and did not and still do not believe it in any form harms my baby!

After having stopped it, his painful moments after feeding returned. Windy, windy and windy. I guess in the end he just has to grow out of it!
