Baby keeps rolling onto front in the night

Hi all.

Baby girl is four months old and sleeps in a bedside crib. Last night I woke up to find that she had rolled onto her front in the night! I panicked and rolled her onto her back, but within an hour she was back snoozing away on her front!

She has good head control and can roll both ways (although she is much better at back to front than front to back. She’s only rolled front to back a handful of times). She’s always put to sleep on her back.

I’m terrified she’ll end up smothering herself! Her crib is empty and her mattress is firm. Neither me nor my partner smoke and we always try and dress her appropriately for the temperature, so I guess she’s as safe as any baby can be aside from the rolling!

Should I keep moving her onto her back or just let her stay on her front if that’s where she’s comfy?

Thanks Smile

If they can roll themselves then it’s fine. If she can get herself there, she can get herself out of trouble. Don’t worry about it.

Definitely agree with @PotteringAlong. My baby boy was the same. As soon as he realised he could roll onto his front he did it every time he was put down. I was awake every hour of the night rolling him back until I was so exhausted. He couldn't roll himself back for weeks after. If your baby can roll herself back you are fine to leave her in her front.

Standard 4 months. It's scary, but it's a fairly quick phase.

Does she still sleep in the same room as you? If it's any help, you're more in tune than you might realise. Don't want to scare you but when my youngest stopped breathing I woke up and realised before his angelcare had gone off (underlying lung issues).

Keep her next to you, make the cot as safe as possible, she'll be fine.

This has just happened with our baby. I spent the first night waking every hour out of fear. Now I ensure she is flat out on her front before I go to bed and she barely moves until morning, you will feel far better about it in a few days.

If she can roll, she’s fine! If you’re worried, check she’s on her back just before you go to sleep. But honestly, if you have everything else set up as you should (which is sounds like you do), it’s really not a problem.

I panicked about this too, but my health visitor said that as baby was rolling herself into her front, it was fine.

Same here! It’s a scary phase but will pass. We had about 2 weeks of having to constantly flip her back around. Unlike most babies, she wasn’t able to turn tummy to back so she literally got stuck face down and would start whining.
