Lost weight due to Gastro

Hello,

My 10 month old used to be really chubby and cute. He is still cute but he’s lost a lot of weight when he got gastro a month ago as he was vomiting and went off his milk.

He’s appetite is back but he only has 3 x 8oz bottles now compared to 5 x 8oz bottles he used to have when he was chubbier and he has 3 meals but doesn’t eat that much. He’s more active now with crawling.

How can I get him back to being chubby or is this it now? I miss his squishyness.

Poor thing. I would add some tiny snacks during the day. This is what we were told to do to DS2 at that age as he had FTT due to gastric problems. I used to do something the HV called 'posting'. If he's resistant to eating much at meals, just tuck some healthy, tiny, bite size snacks into his mouth when he's focused on something else, like playing or a TV show. E.g. tiny pieces of rice cake or wholemeal bread with cream cheese or mashed avocado on top; slices of banana, small chunks of skinned sausage.

At meal times give very densely calorific foods - add a splash of single cream to any porridge, rice or soup. Spread toast, bread, crackers etc with cream cheese, smooth meat or veggie pate or nut butter if he's weaned onto those yet. Finely grate cheese onto spaghetti. Offer full fat yoghurt mashed with avocado or banana. Make mild, creamy dahl, add butter to butternut squash. That way even if he only eats a small amount, he gets in lots of calories at each bite.
