WHY do baths make children sleep

I have a 17 month old who varies between having a good routine and being in bed between 7 and 8, then sometimes is up until 10pm which is not ideal. Bathing 2-3 times a week.

For the past two nights however I have bathed him around 6.30, and both nights he was out like a light and asleep by 7.30!

But even though I've been googling to try and find out WHY, I cannot find the answer. Is there some sort of science as to why kids are knocked out by the bath, or is it just magic?!

Is something to do with body temperature. Think it’s that your body temp dropping helps you fall asleep, so a warm bath raises your temp, then as it drops you feel drowsy.

With DS I think it's because he goes crazy in the bath, soaks the bathroom and whoever is bathing him and wears himself out!

There’s plenty of research on why. I’ve just googled it myself to check. Nothing settles DD down like a warm bath.

It recharges my two! They have bags of endless energy after a bath. So envious of all of you who have sleepy kids after a soak.

It doesn't work on every child.
looks disgustedly at DD 1 and her bath related hyperactivity

Baths never sent mine to sleep!

Birdie6 · 13/07/2019 23:21

It always worked on mine - it works on me too.

I wonder if it’s something to do with reminding them of being in the womb all warm and floaty and cosy.

As a very young baby, my DD was not a fan of bathing so no way was it a relaxing nighttime activity for us, I used to get it out of the way in the morning!

Yes reading your responses of how a bath recharges batteries is a reminder as my boy used to be like that but suddenly I have seemed to have found a magic off switch!!! Well, I shall ride this one out for as long as possible and enjoy the earlier bedtimes, 8pm is definitely better than 10/11pm!!

This never happens with mine. If anything they go hyper after all the splashing. —that I tell them not to do—

Itwouldtakemuchmorethanthis · 13/07/2019 23:40

Dropping temperature.

Ha I wish it worked on our 4 year old!!!
