Moving from UK to Aus with newborn

Hi, I'm moving back to Australia with a newborn (will be about 2-3m old) in the new year.
We will therefore need to take our baby's belongings with us, the main ones being a pram with carry cot attachment, the regular seat we also will have bought for the pram for later, and a car seat.
I'm struggling to find information about flying with a carry cot in particular because unlike a regular pram seat it won't fold down. QANTAS are telling me I need to book it on Qantas Freight separately and can't just take it in oversize baggage which seems mad.
Would love any help. I'm starting to get a little stressed about it all.

You need a pushchair that turns into a pram like the silvercross horizon go. It can also be pushed down fairly well.

Elpheba · 13/07/2019 16:38

What pushchair is it? I had the uppababy and it took me a while to realise that the bassinet did actually fold a bit flatter so worth investigating.
In your shoes I’d probably buy some big travel bags for the buggy and car seat in the hope you can squeeze in all four items within them- lots available on Amazon. Should protect it a bit too.

Is the baby car seat legal in Australia?? There are usually different requirements, as if your seat is bought in the UK it may well not be the correct specification for Australia.

Freight, or at least pre bought baggage will be cheaper than turning up at the airport. On Emirates, freight (sky cargo) is MUCH cheaper than excess baggage. Qantas maybe similar.

Hmm have you bought things now? If it were me, I’d be tempted to manage with a sling initially (which my baby much preferred) and then purchase what you need in Australia.

May not work for you though.

Cocomobile · 13/07/2019 17:13

That seems totally incorrect to me as well re: freight.

As far as I can see on the qantas website, it would just count towards your checked baggage allowance (as it is not collapsible, so might not come under the infant allowance).

We have flown loads of times with kids (around 12 times with a 0-2 year old) and we’ve just put our infant stuff into a giant duffel bag (big enough to fit a large mountain buggy pram) and they’ve never even checked what was inside. We just told them it was the baby’s things and they checked it in under the infant allowance...

We haven't bought the pram yet but are starting to do research. We really like the Joolz Hub. The bassinet/carry cot does not fold down on this unfortunately.
In terms of buying some things here and some in Aus, definitely planning on that. It was just that a buggy/pram was one thing I'd rather have here for the few months we'll be here for.
Australia and UK follow the same car seat safety standards but are called different things. My husband works in motoring journalism so I've got some good inside knowledge there! Thank you for thinking of that though.
Can you tell me more about the travel bags? Are the just protective bags to go around those bulky things to go in the hold?
FYI just got off the phone with Virgin Atlantic who were super helpful on this. They seem quite relaxed about their standards and just want to keep parents happy 👍🏻

Sorry that should have said “we’ve flown loads of time with kids ON QANTAS”

Cocomobile · 13/07/2019 17:16

Btw my understanding was that it was illegal to use a European car seat in Australia. Even if they’re exactly the same seat, if it’s not a locally approved seat it’s still illegal. My friends that just moved back from the uk to Australia bought new car seats for their kids (presumably for this reason)

Cocomobile · 13/07/2019 17:19

Is this your first child? A lot of mums don’t even get to use their prams in the first few months as the babies won’t let them put them down for very long, so they end up just wearing them.

So it might not actually be a bad idea to wait till you’re in Australia before you buy a pram?

surreygirl1987 · 14/07/2019 20:14

Can't you get a cheap pram second hand or while you're in England and then sell it on eBay before you leave? Then buy 'properly' out there? Our gorgous icandy peach was only £120 on eBay! When we're ready to sell it on I anticipate making a profit on it. Also, as posted above, some babies prefer slings for the newborn months anyway.

welshweasel · 14/07/2019 20:17

Buy a second hand pram here (you’ll get an icandy or bugaboo for £150 ish) and a joie juva car seat (£40 but very safe). Sell them when you leave, use a sling for the journey and order your dream pram/car seat for when you arrive in Australia

IComeFromAMumDownUnder · 15/07/2019 14:41

Thank you everyone for all your suggestions!

Surreygirl1987 and welshweasel I did think about buying a second hand pram and reselling. My concern was that selling that on in those last days is a stress I don't need on top of moving out of our house. And if it doesn't sell, I have nowhere to leave/put it.

Cocomobile I think you were actually totally right about the car seats and differences. It looks like while our safety follows the same regulations, the seats are not universally accepted. Seems absolutely insane so now back to the drawing board on that one. We'll probably buy a seat and adaptors in advance and have them waiting in Aus for when we land but just need to figure out those two trips on the UK side.

Also, QANTAS has backtracked. A different person has given me different advice on the luggage! They say I can take three items, doesn't matter what they are. So again Cocomobile sounds like your experience is far more likely and the person I first spoke to was just completely wrong!
All very helpful as a first time mother trying to navigate this lol
