Baby threw his head back

Hi all- it could be that I’m a completely paranoid first time parent...please let me know if that’s the case or if I need to get baby checked out!

I was breastfeeding 7 week old baby in cradle position an hour ago and when he finished, he threw his head back really hard. He doesn’t normally so wasn’t expecting it and his head jerked backwards quite hard. He then brought it forwards and did it again before I moved my arm to support his head more so he couldn’t do it again.

Is this a cause for concern? Have read horror stories about shake baby syndrome and am panicking!

Thanks x

I'm sure the baby is fine. I remember my children banging their heads side to side and backwards and forwards in their car seats .... used to scare the hell out of me!!
Babies do start flinging themselves from an early age, you can't have a flimsy hold on them as they just lunge without warning

Hi.. I'd say baby will be fine but I remember being a first time parent and being worried so I'd speak to your health visitor and put your mind at rest

All babies throw their head back at various points. And they do it suddenly too. You needed repeated force to produce sbs, you baby will be totally fine. Try not to worry xx

Babies have jerky movements and often loll their heads like this when you least expect it!

What you've described sounds like no cause for concern. And nothing like shaken baby syndrome which is repeated shaking from an adult (abuse).

Thank you. He’s awake, alert and feeding fine so has cleared up my worry himself really. I think everyone talks about suppprting the head so much, it worries me! Note to self though- have a better hold of his head during feeding! The midwife in hospital told me not to hold the back of his head during feeding so he could come off when he’d had enough but now that he’s stronger, I’ll just make sure a hand is lightly there!
