10 month has Bronchiolitis - Help!

My baby woke up really wheezy but he was fine in himself. But his wheeze got progressively worse and we took him to the A&E. He oxygen saturation were 92% and and breathing fast so they gave him a nebuliser which helped things and after 4 hours they discharged him with an inhaler.

The nurse visited him today and checked his oxygen levels and they were 95%.

But he’s still so wheezy and out of breath.

I’m so worried.

Completely understand your worry. It's hard seeing our little ones so poorly.

It sounds like the medics are on the case with him. If he gets any worse you know they're on the end of a phone and will help him.

my ds had this about the same age OP. It was a long time ago though, so I may be a bit out of touch. Can you use the inhaler ? mine hated the big spacer going over his face and a GP told me to use a polystyrene cup with a hole in the bottom instead and it helped him to put that on his face much easier. Go back to the hospital if you see him going downhill. Mine lost his appetite also and was very prone to chest infections for a couple of years. I don't know if this is any help but I hope he gets better soon

Can you take him back to hospital? My DD1 (6 months old at the time) was in hospital for 4 or 5 days with bronchialitis. (This was 13 years ago when I think hospitals were better resourced.) Better safe than sorry with babies.

Do not be afraid to take him back. My ds was about the same age, got bronchiolitis, was briefly admitted then discharged. They said he will get worse before he gets better. He did indeed get progressively worse and after four days I thought this isn’t right. Took him back to a&e and his oxygen was at 87%. He was admitted on oxygen then and there and ended up staying in for two weeks (he had caught bloody flu as well). Not saying that is the case with you, but do trust your instinct if you are worried. A&e will not begrudge an ill baby as they kept telling me.

So ended up taking him to A&E again as he wouldn’t sleep, screaming in pain and pulling in his chest heavily.

They’ve admitted him again and he has deteriorated again

My daughter had this too. It's scary but he will get better. Hospital is the best place as they can monitor his oxygen levels continuously and treat as needed. Don't agree to them discharging you too early as even if the nebulisers work, as you've found out it's not a permanent fix and he will likely need them until the worst of the bug has passed. Hope he picks up soon

To those who have posted, did you children have any recurrent episodes or did it effect their chest in the kind run?

So glad you took him back, good on you for trusting your instincts. I don’t want to lie, we ended up back in hospital a few times after the first one, never for as long. Long story short he is now 2.5 and hasn’t been in hospital for over 6 months so touch wood is growing out of it. Please feel free to pm me at any point if you want to chat. From what the doctors and specialists said, it sounded like we were an unusual case the amount of times we ended up in hospital so I don’t want you to panic!! But to know that you are not alone and IF it happens again he will be ok xx

My DD had this in January and ended up in hospital. She recovered quickly once antibiotics kicked in for the throat infection she also had. She hasn't had any recurrent episodes or lasting affects.

Hi OP, it’s such a worrying time, and I hope your son is on the mend soon. I’m afraid to say my dd had it as a baby and has suffered from what I suppose you could call a ‘weak chest ’ ever since but manageable with inhalers and a preventer especially in hay fever season and virus time

Hi op, after catching whooping cough at 2 weeks old my ds was susceptible to other things - he had bronchialitis on /off for ten months! Def not suggesting your ds- will as he was a bouncing 10 months without WC thrown in, but just to say my ds is now a strapping nearly 18 yo!! He joins the army soon and has absolutely no ill effects from being ill. It's awful caring for an ill baby, but look after yourself too remember!

After bronchiolitis at 6 weeks old my DS seems to catch every cough going.
He’s always snotty and wheezy and has had croup a fair few times too.

DS2 was admitted to hospital with bronchiolitis at the age of 17 days and spent his first Christmas in intensive care. He is now a very active 9yo.

Well we are being discharged today! Wahoo!

He’s made a good recovery. Still wheezy but I’m assuming he will be for a while.

He’s starting nursery end of August which I’m afraid of as he might pick up things but it’s something I have to face.

That’s great news, I can still remember how happy my dc was to be home and that was a very long time ago, and she wasn’t even 1 at the time. I hope you get some sunshine and fresh air away from a stuffy hospital too.
