Can anyone help? What’s wrong with my 11 week old!

My 11 week old baby keeps having periods where she is inconsolable for up to 3 hours and not even magic boob will help (in fact she pushes off and gets more agitated sometimes).
I’ve tried cuddling, rocking, singing, white noise, swaddling, regular nappy changes, removing all stimulation so sitting quietly in our darkened bedroom, dummy, gripe water, putting her in the sling and swaying/walking - all of these things normally work for sending her to sleep but not when she’s having these “extra fussy” episodes. I even checked her temp last night as I was running out of ideas!
Any thoughts? She gets so upset and I feel really sorry for her as I’m not helping! I’m pretty sure it’s not wind as my methods for winding or soothing wind haven’t been working either!

Is this a new thing or something she’s always done?

If it’s started recently it could be teething?

Mylittlepony374 · 12/07/2019 12:19

I was coming to say teething too if it's a new thing....my first started at 9 weeks. People kept telling me it couldn't be, she was too young, but it was. Try a bit of bonjella/ teething gel and see if it helps?

BarberBabyBubbles · 12/07/2019 12:29

Could she be too hot? I worked out that my dd was screaming at me the other day cos she was too hot and couldn’t sleep!

Overtired?
Pain? Teeth, something around her toes? Reflux?
Too cold/hot?
Over stimulated/over tired?
Wind? Try cat in tree pose, bicycling legs.

kittlesticks · 12/07/2019 13:11

My son used to do this and in the end we put it down to over tiredness. He settled down and stopped it once he was old enough to get into a regular routine.

Thanks for replies. Tonight until now has been the same as the last few evenings. I’ve tried to cool our room down so there’s somewhere to sit feed and cuddle that’s a bit cooler.
She’s still been very fractious 5pm til 8pm and has finally settled. It’s a new thing for her - she used to cluster feed in the evenings in the early days but as long as she got boob all evening it was OK but this seems different. She seems in pain so I’m thinking @thewinehasgonetomyhead and @Mylittlepony374 could be on to something with the teething. It’s good to know it can start this early as it crossed my mind but Dr Google makes out like that’s pretty impossible at her age. She does have little whites or teeth showing under the gums though so they’re there!

She does a lot of jamming her hand in her mouth but not sucking, kind of desperately chomping like that’s what is upsetting her.

Baby bonjela seems to be all from 3+ months and she’s a couple of weeks of 3 months yet 😟

There are some teething gels you can use for under 12 weeks, I got them before mine was old enough for bonjella. I'll try & find name for you. But also you could try her with a dose of paracetamol + see does that help? I think from memory it's OK from 8 weeks but a chemist could tell you for sure.

I thought of colic because my baby was like yours between 5-7pm and was diagnosed with colic. It does pass but is awful while it lasts, poor kid. Yours may not have colic of course, which usually starts at an earlier age, but it sounds like it.

@Mylittlepony374
I gave her one dose of calpol last night because she really seemed in pain. It was the same stuff I used after her 8 week jabs and I think that helped! I’m pretty sure I can see teeth under the gums too but whether they’re actually coming through or not I have no idea! I’m going to go to the pharmacy first thing Monday to see what they have that could help. Thank you for the tips!

@Rachelover40
She did have colic early on but recently seemed to have grown out of it. I know they say 5pm onwards can be the witching hour though!

Dentinox is suitable from birth.
If its not teeth could it maybe be trapped wind? Try bicycling her legs. Always worked for my DS and he would let RIP! He really struggled with it until he was more mobile.

Stringervest · 13/07/2019 22:24

DD started doing a very similar thing at bedtime from around 8 weeks. It went on for at least a month, we just cuddled her through it. It passed eventually, still no idea what caused it (sorry that doesn't help).

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 13/07/2019 22:29

Google purple crying. It’s a thing. My niece went through a stage very similar. Good luck op it will get better!

My dd used to have a witching 'hour' (lol) which was actually about 3 hours where she would just scream and scream. I thought she might have been overstimulated or tired or both. There wasn't much to do except take her to a dark room and put some white noise on (I used womb noises)

GivemeGinandTonic · 13/07/2019 22:31

Of it’s the same ish time most night v likely colic at that age. I tried all sorts of over the counter stuff but Coleif (despite the expense!) was an absolute life saver. It’s horrendous on both parents and baby when they’re like that.

BazaarMum · 13/07/2019 22:50

Lot’s of people say their baby is teething from eight weeks or so, to explain this kind of thing. It’s really unlikely in my experience. It’s most likely ‘colic’, that annoying vague term. Especially if it’s the same time in the evening every day, more or less. One of my BF DCs did this around the same time and all we could do was feed, feed, feed, jiggle and walk in a sling, and feed some more before she settled down. It passed after a few weeks.

BazaarMum · 13/07/2019 22:52

My GP was pretty adamant that Colief etc. are total placebos, they make you feel like you’re doing something but not supported by evidence. Take a look at the ingredients list before deciding your happy to dose her up. It’ll most likely pass before you know it.

EarringsandLipstick · 13/07/2019 23:07

I'm voting for teething & it's definitely possible. My first started at 10 weeks, tho actual teeth didn't come through for another 10!
Definitely teething - red cheeks, endless dribbling, gums bothering her.

She was early with a lot of things, my 2 boys later.

ChaoticKate · 14/07/2019 06:44

Sounds like colic to me. My little girls colic came and went from about 3 weeks through to about 16 weeks. Usually 3 solid hours of screaming in the evening.

GivemeGinandTonic · 15/07/2019 07:21

Coleif absolutely worked wonders, it’s lactase drops which counteract the lactose.
Infacol, dentinox version, gripe water etc - I found to be a total waste of money and did nothing

Just wanted to follow up on this thread and say thanks to those who replied.
She’s been unsettled on and off for the last few days and hasn’t been herself, chomping her hand (and my shoulder) lots of dribbling and a bit of nappy rash.
I’ve been feeding more frequently to settle her but also thinking it’s hot and she have might needed the extra hydration because it’s been hot.
I tried to find Dentinox and nowhere in the medium size town or big city I live near to stocked it! But in the end went to a pharmacy and they recommended something called Anbesol. It’s suitable from birth but also used to treat adults too and it basically numbs the pain. Rubbed some on tonight after a bit of a hysterical crying session and she was a happy smiley baby again - yay!
So possibly got a very early teether (I can see her bottom two quite clearly under the gum!) but we’ll see.
🙂
