Newborn questions!

WindFlower92 · 11/07/2019 16:21

Hi guys, I've got a few questions so thought I would put them all on one thread to avoid starting millions! For context I've got a 6 week old EBF baby.

Firstly - I'm finding it very hard to judge temperature during summer. I think I've cracked what to put her in to sleep at night, but I'm reading that newborns shouldn't be taken outside during this heat in the day - is this right? Should I only be taking her out outside of 11am-3pm each day? Obviously this is limiting but I can manage, but I'm worried about my wedding in the middle of August - we were planning to have a garden party after the ceremony which is 12:30, so would mean we're outside for most of the afternoon - should we change plans to avoid baby being outside for these hours if it's really hot?

Secondly - regarding car seats, how can I tell if my baby's position is correct? I've got a Journey seat from Mothercare, and to me it seems that as I can't see her neck when she's sat up this must be the wrong position; should she be further back so I can see her neck? She is apparently quite tall for her age so might I need a different size for her? I think I'm paranoid about this as obviously when I'm driving I can't check on her!

Thirdly - baby currently has thrush on her tongue which we're trying to treat. I've read up on the symptoms for myself, and I'm not sure if I have thrush or not! My nipples feel quite sensitive, almost like the way sensitive teeth feel when they're exposed to the cold if that makes sense? They hurt a little at first when she latches on, but then the pain subsides. Appearance seems normal. I have cream but I don't really like the idea of putting it on constantly as I get paranoid she's going to be licking it off! So don't really want to be using it unless it's necessary.

Lastly - I feel like this is going to make me sound like a bad mum, but where do you guys put your baby during the day? Obviously I hold her and try to play with/entertain her as much as possible, but I need to put her down sometimes and I don't know where is best! She doesn't like her playmat (I think it's too hard against the floor so will try to find another), I have a bouncy chair which I put her in while I'm pottering about in the kitchen, but other than that she's got her moses basket downstairs. I feel bad about putting her in this as I feel like she can't see much other than the ceiling, which isn't going to be much fun for her! Should I feel bad about putting her in here for little bursts while I give my arms a break? Or is there a better alternative?

Thanks if you've read all those, any suggestions/reassurances will be welcome!

Forgot my last question - I've read about breast shields to protect sensitive nipples against clothing - does anyone know where I can find these? Anytime I type it into google it just comes up with nipple shields, which are a different thing!

I can't answer much here but you can get a mirror that attaches to the car head rest so you can see her reflection when driving.

On what to wear, I have a three month old and just put him in little shorty pjs from H&M without a vest.

Congrats on your baby! X

@WindFlower92 go to Mothercare and ask them to check baby's position in the seat they have trained car seat advisors x

Congratulations OP on your little lady!
Your first question - you can take her out, but keep her out of the sun and make sure she doesn't over heat. Sun cream and hats are a must. I don't think you need to change your weeding time but just be aware of how warm she is and maybe if possible have someone who could take her inside for a bit if it's really warm.
Q2 I've no real advice sorry, other than at this age I couldn't see my DD next when she was sitting as she didn't have the head control.
Q3 if she has recurrent thrush it's worth treating yourself as well to try and clear it up.
Q4 my DD was in her bouncy chair on her playmat or in her Moses basket, they can't see terribly far and that age. If your worried could you get a mobile for her Moses basket so she's something to focus on?
I used sensitive breast pads in my bra, got them from boots or Asda I think. Not sure if that's what you're looking for but it stopped the rubbing for me!

You sound like your doing a great job, good luck with your DD and for your wedding!

In terms of your last point your baby is so so small still she really doesn't need much stimulation yet so I suggest Moses basket is totally fine. Newborns sleep a lot in the day so don't worry about putting her down that's fine.

  1. Never heard this and I suspect it’s nonsense, there are countries that are far hotter all of the time than the U.K. is between 11 and 3 and obviously people leave the house. Keep baby in the shade obviously.
  2. Get a mirror for the car so you can see her. I’m struggling to visualise the position you’ve described but if you’re worried carry the baby in to the Health Visitor weighing clinic in the car seat and ask them to have a look? Or go back to mothercare and ask them?
  3. I’d ask the HV about the thrush
  4. I think it’s good to put the baby down and have a break. Put the playmat on a rug and get a mobile for the Moses basket of you think it’s needed.

You sound like such a lovely Mum Smile

Temperature - get a gro-egg/room thermometer if you don't already have one. I sometimes put DS in just a nappy at night when we was a newborn and it was really hot. Baby shouldn't be in direct sun until over 6 months, always in shade and not outside all day, obviously breastmilk is great for hydration and you don't need to give water. Maybe for your wedding she could go inside for a nap, if someone will stay with her?

Get pro advice on the car seat, and a mirror like this: www.amazon.co.uk/Onco-B-20082010-Baby-Car-Mirror/dp/B01FCMV5RM/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?s=gateway&keywords=car+seat+mirror+rear+facing&sprefix=car+seat+mirror&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1562859954&sr=8-3

Close caboo sling was a lifesaver for me when DS was little as it meant he could snuggle me but I had my arms free. But otherwise any of the options you mention are fine for putting her down - bouncy chair, pram, moses basket, blanket on floor.

Pascha · 11/07/2019 16:55

Curing the day she will probably be quite happy in a bouncy chair or swing chair while she's awake and watching you, or on a playmat or baby gym thing on the floor. Babies are squidgy so don't worry about it being too hard.

WindFlower92 · 11/07/2019 17:57

Thanks all! I think I'll take her into Mothercare to get her checked over just to be sure, and @TillyTheTiger that mirror looks good, thank you! Will also look at getting her a mobile for the moses basket to make me feel less guilty when she's awake in there!

I'm sure I'll have 50 more questions by next week Grin
