I don't know what happening to my little fella (10 month old) but since yesterday, he's had a very, very high temperature and has been really, really poorly- at one point I thought he was having febrile seizures. Took him to the Paediatric A&E unit where they monitored him for 4 hours and then sent us home. Calpol doesn't seem to be touching the fever- the only medicine to help was ibuprofen at the hospital (which we don't have at home). Yesterday's hypothesis by the Dr was that baby may have a UTI but we struggled to collect a urine sample from the baby.

He's EBF and is having regular feeds, has gone off any food, he's weeing normally I think but has very loose stools. I've just a cold compress in an attempt to lower his temperature as well as placing a fan in the room to cool him down (facing away from him). I've just called A&E and spoken to someone there and they've asked me to keep baby st home and monitor him for any changes and said if he'd been discharged earlier from their department then they had no serious concerns.

I suffer from anxiety though and can't help but feel something bad will happen :/ has anyone faced anything similar?

My little one has had 4 febrile convulsions the things I do when they are hot Are alternate ibuprofen and calpol, strip them off, fan on and lots of baths, even if it means 6 baths a day

Blowing on their bits also makes them wee!

The hospital should have uri-bags which stick to the genital area (different types for both sexes) and help to catch a urine sample. Seems poor that they didn’t.

When DS2 was younger and in hospital and needed a sample they had a bag that fit over his genital area and stuck to his skin, so collected when he was ready to go himself without trying to force it. I thought they were commonplace?

QueenofPain · 12/07/2019 19:32

Just had a look on amazon for them, in fairness the hospital might not stock them as they’re very expensive. £45 for 10 bags.

And the abdominal massage to get a clean catch sample is another good method, but obviously hasn’t worked.

Oh OP that sounds like such a tough night. And you being pregnant too!! Bless you. So sorry your little boy is so poorly :(

In regards to the UTI diagnosis, luckily my boy went for a wee when at hospital which we managed to catch in a special tube thing that we put over his genitals (he was not impressed). The sample was tested and confirmed as UTI, he also had a scan a few weeks later to confirm it had cleared up.

Hope things improve for you OP, must be even harder when your pregnant.

Can anyone tell me what are the actual symptoms of a UTI?

Rosebud1302 · 12/07/2019 21:16

@Tinks15 we didn't have a clue it could be a UTI. Similar symptoms to OP - sudden fever, lethargy, really unsettled and irritable. Didn't want to eat. Just generally really unwell. I remember he was just motionless laying on my chest for a long time and would suddenly start crying every now and then. It was horrible. So you would soon know something was up!

I hope your little one is soon feeling better. I just wanted to add that often when they go off food and take more breastmilk their stools can go runny with the increase in milk. My little ones always did. Just change them quickly and perhaps apply a barrier cream so he doesn't get sore. Big hugs xx
