i have looked at the nhs student bursary page but the calculator there isnt working yet and when i phone i am put on hold for half an hour!!!

i am on my own with 2 children ages 3 and 8, and wont be working whilst at Uni.
the degree is funded by the NHS and all fees paid but i dont want to apply until i know how much bursary i can get!!

dont even know what sort of loan i can get!

What's the course? I seem to remember some bursarys are not means tested anyway?

allgonebellyup · 28/07/2007 19:03

its speech therapy

it is means tested which should be a good thing as i am a single parent with no income!

Sorry, don't know much about that, I was thinking of nursing which is not means tested and you seem to get more.
Is this the relevant page? You would surely get the maximum?
www.nhspa.gov.uk/sgu/SupportForStudents/DLSandPGD/default.aspx.
There's also a bit in 'additional allowances' about childcare allowance.

thanks Thursday for that. yes nurses (and doctors obv!) get WAAAAAAAAAAAY more than all the other NHS students, its not fair..

I think it's just nurses who get more, seem to remember doctors don't get much and it's a longer course so very expensive.
It's not fair in some ways, but I think it's because they find it harder to recruit for student nurses than the other professions. Something to do with the grotty jobs and hideously antisocial hours nurses have to do(my DP is a nurse), while you will hopefully have a relatively civilized job.

...im going to try and find my oldish leaflet...you could get six grand or more...plus childcare (80%) paid.

ill go have a rummage

beansontoast · 29/07/2007 12:14

drat,,,have thrown away the booklet that i had with cases/examples in it....soz

however ,it may be useful to know that as a mature studen with no dependents i once was awarded £4,100...but then had a load taken off for 'spouses contribution'....which of course you wont be stung for!

do you have a mortgage?... a mortgage is considered in the/your 'outgoings' column of the means testing...however RENT IS NOT!!!!!!

hth...X

allgonebellyup · 29/07/2007 12:20

thanks BoT again!

yes we do have a mortgage, dh still pays it for us but he doesnt live here - so dont know if that would count??? its a hefty mortgage though.

do you know if i could claim Income Support or keep my single parent tax credits (around £80 a week at mo) if i receive a full bursary??
or can you only do bursary & loans but no tax credits?

i am so worried i will not have enough to live on and my children will slowly starve!

if someone else is paying it then you cant claim it as your 'outgoing'...unfortunately.

not sure about benefits..dont think you are entitled ...but as iu said not sure.

allgonebellyup · 29/07/2007 12:36

maybe if dh stopped paying mortgage, which he might, would they pay the whole lot do you think?? (its around £700 per month!!)

no obviously they would never pay that!!! (stupid allgonebellyup)

student nurses may get more help financially, but our academic year is much longer than any other NHS course and we work 37.5 hr weeks when on placement.

allgonebellyup · 29/07/2007 18:30

didnt mean to offend you tiredemma!

allgonebellyup · 31/07/2007 07:32
