DD took to weaning a bit too well!

My DD is nearly 7 months and we began weaning about 5.5 months. It started off rocky with her not being sure about being spoon fed, but when I started giving her more finger food she started really enjoying it Smile she's now having her 3 meals a day.

The problem is she's completely gone off her formula, she just seems to want her food. I remember from my DS that they drop the bottles gradually as they start eating more, but DD has gone from having 6 7oz bottles a day to only wanting her morning and evening one. I do still try to give her her other bottles (we've dropped one, so we're at 5 now - was planning to drop another one soon and replace with a snack) but she'll usually just take an ounce or 2 and then refuse the rest. What shall I do, shall I try cutting back on her solids so she takes more formula, or should I just accept the fact she only wants 2 bottles a day?

Thanks!

Mine weaned from all milk to 4 meals a day within about 3 weeks and then went off the milk so I used to put formula in things like mashed potatoes or make up porridge or weetabix with it as well as the 4 - 6 oz they'd drink.

How about pitting formula into her foods? Cereals, potatoes eggs etc. My LO 7months is under dietician due to a CMPA, and they actually want me to cut his formula intake down to 2 8oz bottles a day! as long as they're taking a minimum of 16oz per 24 hour period and a good balanced diet they will be getting all they need :)

If she were a breastfed baby you’d follow her lead. Could you give her vitamin drops if that’s your worry?

as long as she's getting plenty of calcium from different sources I wouldn't worry.

MustardScreams · 08/07/2019 21:42

Just make sure she’s getting plenty of calcium rich foods and she should be absolutely fine. You can buy vitamin drops as well just to make sure she’s getting everything.

But this is a good thing! As long as she’s still drinking some milk, and eating a varied diet she will be fine.

6 7oz bottles is a lot at that age I think, although I met be misremembering. I'm sure mine was on 4 x 6oz bottles so perhaps it feels like she's off her milk but it's a natural declining for her age?

Pineapplefish · 08/07/2019 21:55

My DC1 was like this, except that he was breastfed so I couldn’t tell exactly how much milk he was getting, but he was on three meals a day by that age and definitely not very interested in milk. Agree that it’s not a problem as long as you give her calcium in yoghurts, cheese, milk on cereal etc.

Your baby was having 42 oz milk a day??!

Thank you so much everyone, you've made me feel much better Smile I'll get her some vitamin drops, start sneaking milk into her food and just follow her lead Smile x x x

Mine takes 3 six ounce bottles a day now so I'd say try to get her to take 16-20oz a day in formula. Or two bottles, formula powder mixed in to food, and water offered often. Don't stress it if you can.

When ds weaned at 6 months he point blank refused bottles,we just went with what he wanted really. He had no problems not having formula anymore.
