4 month old - should we go on holiday?

Hello guys, where do I start lol...

My baby will be 4 months old in August and I really would love to take him away on holiday somewhere, but god there's a lot to think about isn't there!

Obviously I would use suncream and he would have hats, but will he be okay to even be in the sun so much that young?

Any destinations/villas/hotels abroad anyone could suggest that's baby friendly and not too far away?

Also, if anyone knows any places that you can go where you can rent things like car seats, Cots and pushchairs, or any tips on what to do there?

(So many questions lol) but what about things like formula, sterilising equipment, bottles, nappies etc... there's so much stuff, do you just pay for the extra baggage?

Thanks in advance for any advice :)

Do you have to go in August? Or can you wait until September/October when it is a little cooler but much cheaper.

It depends where you go. There are lots of places where you can hire baby equipment in Cyprus and they deliver and collect from your hotel.

liz1222 · 05/07/2019 16:48

My husband can't do September because of work so it would have to be August or October and I was thinking October might be too cool, what do you think? :)

I'll have a look at Cyprus thanks :)

Canaries will be warm in October.

I would go I in August and October if I could haha. I found traveling with a younger baby easier than as he got older

Petitprince · 05/07/2019 17:09

I'd be tempted to take the car and go to Cornwall or northern France. Take what you like that way.

My baby is 4 months old and I can tell you that he is really struggling in this heat

We went abroad when he was 7 weeks old and he coped better than he did now.

I would def push back to Oct when it's cooler

Mammalian · 05/07/2019 17:36

I'd definitely wait until October. He will be far too hot and it won't be enjoyable for anyone as you'll just be worrying. I'd say:

  • get a sling/ carrier
  • an easily foldable/lightweight buggy
  • no idea how formula travels, or if you're allowed to pack it, sorry
  • you can buy little sterilizing bags that you put bottle into, and then put in microwave
  • there's also these little material type 'seats' that you attach to a chair, instead of a high chair

Thanks everyone :) I'm definitely considering October now. Any suggestions where at that time of year?

Going to look into canaries :)

Tui family life holidays are fabulous for young children and babies. They have hotels all over

Ash39 · 05/07/2019 18:22

I'd go in August. Most hotels in Europe have air conditioning. Plus this means you won't have started weaning, which is an added complication...

Wait4nothing · 05/07/2019 18:30

Baltic’s cruise from uk - nice weather in August but not too hot - no flying so no luggage restrictions. If baby sleeps in pushchair in evening you can do all the nice restaurants/evening entertainment. We packed ready made formula because of the no weight restrictions. Big ones for night (fridge in cabin) little in day (so we didn’t have to go back to room and when off ship. Lots of new places to see - most can be done on public transport from port so with pushchair or even take a car seat (remember no restrictions as long as it fits in the cabin 😂👍). They have cots for cabin and high chairs in all restaurants. Cool enough to still use a sling if needed. We sterilised in zip lock bags with Milton in cabin sink every morning during breakfast and evening during dinner if required.

I don’t agree with going in August as hotels have air conditioning unless you’re planning to spend your time in your room.
I think it will be too hot unless going somewhere north. October can be lively and less crowds.
Car seats can be problematic as they are usually pretty crap and I think you’ll probably have to bring your own.
I think you should go somewhere like Rome. Lots to see and great food and your baby will not be moaning about how bored they are or how far they are walking whereas an older child could be a nightmare! There or some other interesting city (Venice, Granada, Paris, Berlin etc etc). Once kids age a bit you will be more inclined to a beach type holiday.
Ideally breastfeed as so much easier but if not these countries have babies too so all the stuff is available to buy.

Pipandmum · 05/07/2019 18:46

That’s supposed to be ‘lovely’ not lively!

motherofcats81 · 05/07/2019 18:52

There's quite a lot of places in Southern Europe which will still have nice weather first couple of weeks in October. I went to Mallorca then and it was glorious, hot but not too hot.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 05/07/2019 18:54

All this ‘it will be too hot’ business really depends how your baby is with heat (which you should have a good idea about if you’ve had the same weather as I have this week?!). Neither of mine have ever had an issue with the heat, they’ve been comfortable, (breast)fed plenty, no issue.

I’d do it. Aug and Oct if money will stretch to it. Non-moving, non-weaning babies are so portable and simple. This might be your last holiday where you can more or less do what you choose for quite a long while. Grin

It will be hot in August most places and likely to be busy too but that being said it’s doable. A decent lightweight stroller that lies entirely flat with a good hood to provide shade is a must. You can but a fan to clip onto the pram to help keeping baby cool.
A sun umbrella would be good for when your not walking but they’re a pain when your pushing the pram having to constantly move them around.
Travel wise your allowed to take baby milk and sterilised water through airport security enough for your travel time plus some extra so don’t worry about that.
You could pack your steriliser or just pack some Milton tablets and do cold water sterilising while your away. If your in a self catering place then they’ll likely be a washing up bowl or large bowl that you could use for the Milton solution for sterilising.
You could rent a car seat but it appears to be luck of the draw as to how good they are, I am hiring one for my dd (9months) old when we go to America.
Cot wise I don’t know, I assume of your informing the hotel you have a baby then surely they provide one? If not I would co-sleep. The lullaby trust has some good safe co-sleeping guidelines worth looking at just in case

Charlottejade89 · 05/07/2019 19:03

I think its TUI that you can pay extra for. baby package, so you tell them which brands you use and they provide you all your nappies, formula, wipes etc at the hotel as well as steriliser, bouncer if you want it, and cot. You can hire car seats if you need them but if your travelling with an infant airlines usually let you check in 2 items for free (in our case pram and car seat). Also just be aware that it's not recommended to use suncream on babies under 6 months old, you're better to just keep them covered or in the shade
