Tea tree oil

Hi, following on from my nappy washing info plea yesterday, I think that tea tree oil in the pail might be giving my DS a bit of nappy rash. I use a few drops to damp down the smell in the pail.

I use some old facecloths as wipes and think that these are the problem more than the nappies (as I use liners).

What could I use instead? I've got some lavender oil left over from when I had DS two years ago. Would that be OK - or liable to be a nappy rash problem again? Or just not bother putting anything in at all?

Washing everything through today in an effort to remove tea tree and washing liquid residues. Before it rains...again...

I wouldn't bother putting anything in at all

or if you need it for the smell, maybe put a drop on a tissue taped to the underside of the lid so it never gets on the actual nappies

i had the same thing with tea tree oil and a rash all around where the nappy fitted on DS. i just stopped using it and kept washing the nappies till there was no smell of it left on. i use fleece liners so these were in the pail too and he was red all over so i knew it was the tea tree.

you could put a few drops on a cotton bud and stick to the lid of the nappy bucket if the smell is really a problem

Tea tree oil is known for causing allergies, I think. It certainly gives my DD a rash when I use it in the machine with her nappies. I use lavendar oil now.... smells nicer and is apparently also anti-bacterial.

I've heard someone suggest a panty-liner stuck onto the underside of the lid with a few drops of oil.... absorbant and with a sticky strip! Maybe that would work as it wouldn't be in contact with the nappies?

Hi, thanks for all the tips. I have some lavender oil left over from post stitches baths a couple of years ago, so may use that on a liner at the top of the bucket.

I've got all the nappies, wipes and wraps washed and re-washed, but forgot that the buckets still smell of it. Had soapy water in them this am and letting them air in the sun this afters. Yes I said it - in the sun!!

Thanks to all.
