Omeprazol for baby - Help?

LaurenElizabethJayne · 01/07/2019 20:16

Looking for some help with giving my 10 week old Omeprazol.

Dr has prescribed Omeprazol dispersible tablets but I am really struggling to get my LO to take it. I dissolve it in a bit of cool boiled water (also tried hot water - no difference) and it does dissolve, however there are gritty bits in it which aren't coming through the teats of her bottle. I have tried a bigger teat but then the milk is coming too fast and she's spitting it back out anyway. I have asked for it in liquid form but been told no (from looking online it seems very expensive which is probably why)

Has anyone had experience with this and any tips? It will be so much easier once she's being weaned but a long way to go until then.

My daughters been on it since she was baby I always dissolve it in a little apple juice and I use the calpol syringes x

You can get liquid omelrazole suspension it’s just expensive compared to the tablets. If you continue to struggle I’d ask if you can have the liquid.

I was very lucky then as I got the pre made liquid! It’s only a 4ml dose which I put into a teat and give it directly. Worth persevering though as my baby who would previously only do 70ml has just taken 130ml, all down to no reflux. It’s good stuff.

Good luck and I’d suggest baggering the doctors for the pre made liquid xx

Like Rose I mixed it with apple juice and used a calpol syringe. Such a faff though.

I was given omeprazol tablets and a pill crusher 🤨 purely due to expense reasons

I went back to my GP the next day and made sure I was given the liquid for him
Also gaviscon sachets

Have you tried crushing it before dissolving it? The "bits" might be finer. I'd do syringe rather than bottle though, like the ones you get with calpol.

You need to give in a syringe not directly in milk. You normally have to give it in the morning 30 mins before milk too. The gritty bits or beads are bits you need to get in baby as they are the bits that work. It is good stuff, much better than ranitidine. You do need to persevere with it at least the full 2 weeks as you might not notice improvement until then. It is also weight dependent so keep an eye on baby's weight as you will need to increase the dose as their weight increases.

The reason they don't like to prescribe the liquid, not just the cost, but the liquid starts to deteriorate after 2 weeks so begins to lose its effectiveness, this is why the dissolvable tablets are usually given x

I think the leaflet explicitly says not to crush them? I don't know why but do check that before what pp are suggesting.

I always dissolved in water then calpol syringed in. There'd always end up being a compressed bit in the end that would need banging out and a little bit of water added to dissolve the last bit to get that in the baby.

Ah thank you all! Don't know why I didn't think of using the Calpol syringe. Will give it a go in the morning and fingers crossed she takes it and we start to see some improvements.

What icecream said. You definitely need to syringe it (my LO is on omeprazole right now), and keep the syringe mobile (invert it a lot) between squirts to keep the gritty medicine dispersed so it doesn't all get stuck inside the syringe.
