nappy buckets with lids that 'lock' - any recommendations?

hi, I'm looking for a nappy bucket with a lid that will be really hard for my 18 mo. old DD to open. She's into everything and the idea of her drinking the dirty nappy water.....not particularly pleasant, is it! Does anyone know where I can buy one? Thanks, Laa

I just use one of those plastic crates with a lid that locks on: couldn't find a bucket, but it's handier to use a crate as it fits nicely in a corner, you can put the washing basket on top of it, and it will come in handy when I've finished with the nappies!

They're available from all ironmogers / DIY type places: I imagine you can get lid-locking buckets there too.

what about dry pailing???? Just put in a wad of cotton wool with some eucalyptus/lavendar oil and then wash in nappy treatment/soaker as usual.

I dry pail too and it works fine. I wash my nappies with a cold pre-wash before the main wash which is 60C with bio powder and an extra rinse cycle. I've never had any problems with staining.

Do you use liners?

discoinferno · 18/09/2004 17:25

thats directed at anyone that uses nappies not at laa specifically. Sorry for hijacking thread.

fuzzywuzzy · 18/09/2004 17:43

discoinferno, I use flushable liners for when I know dd is going to have a motion have used bourette silk liners when she had a bad red nappy area during a teething bout. But generally no I just use nappies and boosters. I soak nappies in cold water and vinegar, and wash at 60 degrees using non-bio powder and vinegar with an extra rinse cycle. Never had any problems with staining or anything. hth

Hurray!! There are still mums that use cotton nappies, then? Thought all of you were on these 'take 500 years to decompose in the landfill' things, otherwise known as disposables.

fuzzywuzzy · 18/09/2004 18:20

80smum, it is suprising isn't it how many mums actually use real nappies, I was really cross at dp for even suggesting such a ludicrous idea, then I did some research and decided the idea wasn't quite as daft as it first sounded, now I have to stop myself from buying every brand of realy nappy I come across!!!! I do use disposables occasionally though, moltex oko, for when my sister is babysitting when I'm at work.

must confess - don't use cloth with dd but intend to with no2 when he/she arrives - much easier for drying and suh like here in sunny Aus. Used and will use liners - anything from paper flushable ones - to the fleece/cotton ones I have ready for no2....

Also ahve disposables put away for no2 for when we are out and about... so I have a foot in each camp....

Bravely - I even made some of my own muslin and flannelette nappies and some wraps... will let you know how they get on....

sorry to move away from the pailing idea....

I use my old Sangenic bin, we dry pail and it works fine. If you've got one it may be worth a try. I usually put a carrier bag in it first, although you could use one of those nappy nets, makes it easier to transfer the dirty nappies from the bucket to the machine.

misdee · 19/09/2004 16:57

we also use the sangenic bin.

we use fleece liners most of the time, unless i'm down to my last couple of nappies when i have to use paper ones (too many nappies, not enough liners).

Am stockpilling loads of nappies for baby #3 as havent got any washables that will fit ready.

Thanks everyone. I've actuallt just found a bucket in Green Baby or Little Green Earthlets with a snap close lid. Hurrah! Fortunately DD is too busy trying to trash the rest of the bathroom to notice the nappy pail. But I did like the idea of the homebrew kit! Dad's a brewer, so I'll see what he comes up with!

Sorry forgot - I use disop. liners most of the time, but they do ruck up DD's bottom so poo goes everywhere!
