How much do you spend on a weekly food shop?

I have just done my online weekly food shop for this coming week, but just curious as to what others spend on theirs? We are a family of 4- 2 adults and 2 children, toddler and 9 month old baby.
We usually spend between £50-£75 on ours, and shop at Tesco. This week I had to buy laundry capsules, dettol for the work tops and some bleach, so those aren’t things I buy every week.
Wondering if we could get it cheaper though?Hmm

Also a family of 4 - me, DP, a toddler and a 9 month old however we also have a cat
I struggle to do the shop for less than 75-80 for the week at Asda. I find Tesco more expensive for the things we buy
I hear a lot of people saying they buy everything they can at Aldi, and the things they don't sell there at other supermarkets, and it generally saves them quite a bit of money but I've not tried it - aldi don't do online grocery shopping

Greensleeves · 30/06/2019 21:37

Me, dh, 14yo and 16yo boys and 3 cats

First shop of the month is about £100 and includes toiletries, cleaning stuff, cupboard items etc

Then weekly top-up shops of fresh stuff and whatever needs replacing, probably about £50-60

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 30/06/2019 21:39

£50-£75 doesn’t include nappies or wipes right? Also do you do top ups / buy lunches out etc. ?
Your spend sounds about right

£80ish for 3 of us at morrisons. I get the odd top up at lidl and know a weekly shop there would be cheaper but like a pp i'm happy to pay for the convinience of online shopping

Youngandfree · 30/06/2019 21:40

About the same as you OP, family of 4 also

AuntieMarys · 30/06/2019 21:42

2 of us..about £150 a week. Includes gin, wine and beers.

mamaandthegirls · 30/06/2019 22:02

@OnlyFoolsnMothers sometimes includes nappies and wipes but didn’t need to buy any this week as we had enoughSmile we do top ups every week when DP works later in the evenings, so he will pick some bits up after work like loo roll if needed, weekend snacks / baby formula x

2 adults, 1 toddler (no nappies) and 1 cat here. Doesn’t include DH’s lunches and we don’t really buy meat. I was spending about £60 a week at Aldi but now I’ve switched back to Tesco for the online delivery I’m spending on average £80 a week. Rarely top up.

Aldi is cheaper and generally better quality food especially for similar priced dairy products but not their cleaning sprays. They have a small range of food and less processed or ready prepared food so I spend less as I avoid the middle aisle.

One thing that stood out of your post is dettol is expensive and tesco own anti-bac spray is 70p and laundry tablets or powder tends to cheaper than capsules.

£60-70 for 2 adults and one hungry toddler. Pet stuff is done separately. That's online shops, I switch between Tesco and Sainsbury's depending on if they've sent me any offers.

I used to do Aldi which was great but the savings for us weren't enough to warrant no home delivery plus still needing some bits they don't sell from other supermarkets.

Lozzlepop · 01/07/2019 09:16

We spend about £45 a week for the 2 of us for Asda home delivery, cat food is purchased separately and much cheaper online. We used to shop at Aldi but got frustrated when they didn't have the correct items we needed every week. I wouldn't be able to afford to shop at Tesco as its expensive.

mondaybluesgoaway · 01/07/2019 09:21

I have just looked at my bank statement and in June I spent £280. That is for 2 adults, 1 teen and 1 toddler. My DP buys alcohol (I rarely drink) and occasional stuff like milk on his way home. I bet he spends £150-200 a month on alcohol! Ridiculous when you work it out monthly (or yearly) and what you could buy instead!

Jinglejanglefish · 01/07/2019 09:27

£60 a week for two adults and one baby, including nappies. Cat food done separately as supermarkets don't tend to sell the food they eat. Wine also done separately.

I was shopping in aldi but got sick of them not having things I need and it's awful tiny carpark. I've found that I tend to spend around £60 if I shop at Asda or morrisons or aldi

mamaandthegirls · 01/07/2019 09:29

Some divided comments here, interesting to see. We did shop at Asda, but they would rarely have all the bits we asked for and were subbed constantly! Not just that, but we didn’t like the quality of food (had a pork joint bought during one shop and it was all just gristle!!) so switched to Tesco and find the quality of food a little better, we do Sainsbury’s on the odd occasion but found that too expensive for what you get.

Probably average £150-£200 a week for family of 4. I know it's ridiculous and need to cut down. We only have 1 shop which isn't cheap and this contributes to high amount. That includes alcohol.

mindutopia · 01/07/2019 10:15

We spend about £150-£200 per week for a family of 4, but that is literally absolutely everything. That's breakfasts and snacks and lunches. I don't even buy a coffee from Costa, I make it in the morning and take it to work with me. Also, includes nappies and cleaning supplies and a lot of wine/gin/beer plus extras for houseguests (who went through quite a bit of wine this weekend).

I think mine would be less if we only shopped once a week, but we have to do two shops as I need top up things during the week and neither of us can get to a shop due to work locations/commuting, so have to do an online shop, which is £40 minimum.

Hattifnatt88 · 01/07/2019 10:21

We spend around £40 on food per week - me, 5 year old and a cat. Also spend some extra on cleaning/hygiene etc. Having to spend my savings on food though, as we're on UC and without my small savings we would have £21 a week for everything. Not sure what we'll do when the savings run out. Hopefully my work situation will be very different by then.

historysock · 01/07/2019 10:40

£80 for 2 adults two teens. More if we need toiletries etc

BatFacedGirl · 01/07/2019 12:21

3 adults and a 12 year old. We spend around £160 a week.

Staceyle29 · 01/07/2019 14:30

There's me and my husband and 3 month old.. not including nappies, wipes etc our weekly shop is £80!

ziggiestardust · 01/07/2019 14:33

£150 a week. First shop of the month usually costs more and I get loo roll, paper towel, cleaning stuff etc. There are 3 of us plus an au pair, although she’s usually off exploring at the weekends. No nappies or formula. It includes alcohol though, and I shop at Sainsburys or Waitrose because they’re closest.

BillieEilish · 01/07/2019 14:40

About 70 euros every 9 days, no top up shops. Have own fruit.

That includes 7 euros delivery (I don't drive and can't lug 6 litres of water back etc) live in Spain.

Me and 11year old DD.

It could be less but I never go out and I like nice wine!

Ginlinessisnexttogodliness · 01/07/2019 14:40

Two adults three children under 6, a dog and three cats
About £180 a week. If I’m lucky.

I buy about 14 litres of whole milk a week
At least 20 bananas and same for apples and oranges.
Three boxes of wet cat food and one box dog food plus dry food and litter
Twelve yoghurts
Three loaves
Two dozen eggs
Boxes and boxes of those bloody Ella’s kitchen smoothie pouches as all three children are all addicted. They refuse all others and I’ve given up as I don’t like smoothies and have to drink them.

Vast quantities of crisps, cheese, crackers, cooked chicken, cucumber, melon and tomatoes every week

Plus our meals

Plus some booze
I do two shops a week as I cannot stand one huge weekly one.

Isawthesignanditopenedupmyeyes · 01/07/2019 14:43

My shop delivered today was £250. Will last about 10 days to 2 weeks at a push and does include alcohol. 4 of us.

Fizzypoo · 01/07/2019 14:45

2 adults and 2 teens. I do a big monthly shop of about £150 and smaller £20 ish shops to top up. I switch between lidl and asda depending if I can be arsed to go to lidls or get a delivery.

Fizzypoo · 01/07/2019 14:47

Just to add, my DC do have school dinners and we're not in 2 to 3 evenings a week to have tea.
