Can anyone please suggest any good books for me to sit down and discuss the facts of life - puberty etc. with my daughter who is 9.She is going in to primary 6 after the hols. and will be learning about the human body and I don't want her going into the class compleely unaware and naive about everything.
Although she is 9 (soon be 10) she really hasn't asked many questions although when she has I do like to be open with her.

Any help would be great.

I didn't use a book with my kids as i used a really good CD ROM called "Growing up and keeping safe".It covers puberty as well as other issues like internet safety aqnd bullying. It has a buzz words section which was really good(All the meanings of the words that you are never sure how to explain). Its interactive as well so you can share together or alone.Thoroughly recommend it. I got it from their website www.sensecds.com

Not appropriate to use with a 9 year old but I can thoroughly recommend Davina McCall's Let's Talk about Sex. It is for parents and children (but prob older than 9 as goes into all the details) to read and explains it all. Explains the need to not just cover the biological facts but relationships, love, friendship, am i normal, being able to say no, etc. Really really good - even if just for you to get your head around it all.

I had a couple of Usborne books for my ds, one from 7yrs, one from 11yrs I don't know if they're still around, it was a few years ago! I would recommend browsing the childrens book depts science section and skimming through a few to see which would be best for your daughter. If in doubt buy more than one, they like to keep going back to check things. And make sure the books deal with the changes in boys too for a balanced overview, it seems there are still books for the separate sexes. Oh, and a couple of packs of sanitary pads put away in case periods start early!
