Using mobile when feeding baby

Hi, does anyone go on their mobile when feeding (breast feeding) their baby? I do and I was ‘tutted at’ by a family member. I now feel bad for doing it but during the night feeds it keeps me awake and also I am trying to minimise the time I am
In my phone when she’s awake so it’s an opportunity for me message friends/internet shop when she’s feeding /asleep. I’m wondering if the tutting was related to any health concerns with mobiles / babies and now I’m worried about any health risks. Am I being ridiculous?! X

If it keeps you awake or makes the continual feeding any easier then go ahead! There aren't any safety concerns that I know of. You're not leaving your baby in a corner and looking at your phone, you're feeding your baby! Tell them to back off if they tut again.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 29/06/2019 10:43

No but the gutter was. I always did, especially in the middle of the night. Usually I'd be messaging a fellow m friend who was also up feeding a baby. It kept me sane.

My FIL tuts at me for reading on my phone. Whilst he reads the paper. Hmm

Of course! She makes a handy stand sometimes! Babies feed for hours and although yes, it's important to bond and make eye contact etc, what are you supposed to do when they nod off?

AgnesNutterWitch · 29/06/2019 10:48

Of course I do!

Are we supposed to only stare lovingly and adoringly at our little cherubs for hours on end and anything that even momentarily distracts us from our sacred motherly reverie is evil and must be shunned?

MarkingMyPlace9 · 29/06/2019 10:48

I'm currently reading this and feeding my 4 week old Wink

FlatPackPat · 29/06/2019 12:02

Ah fuck the tutter, what a knob.
Reading MN was the only thing that kept me awake during night feeds!

You can only stare lovingly for so long before it gets boring. Phone to your hearts content OP. Soon they'll be crawling g and you'll never get the chance to sit down again, make the most of it I say!! You're doing a great job.

Star39 · 29/06/2019 12:09

Thankyou everyone - you have made me feel so much better! @FlatPackPat same, during the night feeds I am still half asleep - I thought at least being on my phone would keep me awake and stop me dropping the baby and also it doesn’t disturb my sleeping husband Hmm
The Tutter was an older lady so maybe a different generation way of thinking. It did make me feel awful and then of course sent my crazy baby brain thinking that I was causing my baby all kinds of harm from my phone! X

@HoneysuckIejasmine My FIL does the same. Nose in a paper, with MIL beside him doing a puzzle book. No attempt of a conversation on their part, but if anyone in the room the. picks up their phone it's "antisocial" Hmm

OP, ignore them. Neither of my DDs ever gave me any eye contact during feeds and the tops of their heads weren't that interesting after about two minutes. So to Mumsnet I went.

MrsGrannyWeatherwax · 29/06/2019 12:22

Urmmm I come on my phone at some point during most feeds especially once it becomes an eyes closed feed...

I don’t during the night anymore as it keeps me too awake

OverthinkingThis · 29/06/2019 12:25

Yes absolutely did that. It saved my sanity with a newborn. In fact my 18 month old is dozing on my.lap as I type this! No one ever dared tutted at me.

DontCallMeBaby · 29/06/2019 12:31

The tutter is jealous. I’m jealous - when DD was a baby I had a laptop which was frequently on the wrong side of the room, or a book, ditto. An older woman yet would have had the book, maybe a television without a remote control. She had no choice but to gaze lovingly at her baby, and now she’s envious of the entertainment and socialising you can just carry around in your pocket.

Beebeezed · 29/06/2019 18:33

Currently feeding and on my phone

Although I really really shouldn’t...

It’s really bad....

Because I seem to do A LOT of online shopping during breastfeeding sessions!!

CollyWobbleNightmares · 29/06/2019 18:36

Currently looking at my phone whilst DS simultaneously feeds and climbs me. Bloody sharp little toes he has.

BoronationStreet · 29/06/2019 18:42

If I don't have my phone in hand then I go get it before I breastfeed my DS. Blush

It's just so boring and I like to browse MN while he's on me.

Megasaur5keeper · 29/06/2019 21:18

I either have my phone or watch TV. Esp if likely to be a longish feed. Like Boronation, I make sure I have access to both (and water) before I sit down. To my shame, the baby (age 1) now signals she wants a feed by bringing me the remote.

Newmumma83 · 29/06/2019 21:22

I did my meal planning online food order, bargain hunting on Facebook for sale sites and Mumsnet catch ups if my ds fell
Asleep ... he had wind so I had t hold
Him up for 30 mins after every feed to get it all up ... my phone was my sanity!!

Ignore or if it happens again perhaps
Politely ask them to explain what they are tutting about ...

user1493413286 · 30/06/2019 22:24

How ridiculous to tut at you, going on my phone kept me sane during the million breastfeeds I did a day as well as keeping me awake at night.
It won’t be long until your child is running around and you’ll never be able to look at your phone or they’ll be trying to take your phone off you so go ahead while you can
