Gassy pains: could it be the formula?

My baby is just over 2 weeks old and over the last four days or so seems to have gassy pains in her tummy. She is only comfortable if being held 'upright' (head towards my shoulders) when it is hurting her.

She is mixed fed, formula and breast milk. Having problems with breast feeding so expressing what I can, please no hate, I've really tried.

She was originally having ready to feed SMA until we realised breast feeding was not happening and stocked up a bit on something else. Aptimil profutura I think it is.

Wondering if people think the pains could be related to this formula? She was fine on the SMA and BM combo for about a week.

Sorry should have added, am doing all the obvious things to relieve wind and have suggested to DH we may need to try her with infacol if it persists. It has only been a few days, so I could be jumping the gun thinking it's the formula.

It could absolutely be the formula, equally it could just be some temp trapped wind. Is she getting her wind up during burping time? if she was fine on the sma, I wouldn't have changed tbh. Maybe you could go back to that? You can also get SMA lactose free formula which would definitely help with wind! Infacol takes a few days to build up in their wee systems, and stops working as they become "immune" to it, maybe alternate infacol & dentinox.. I find laying LO tummy down on your knee and lighting bouncing them up and dow

Sorry, posted too soon. Gently bouncing them up and down can help with getting wind up. Hope LO is feeling better soon

Tiny babies take a while to get used to being babies. Don't stress that you have to use formula, thats just the way it is. Try simple methods of 'burping' baby, hold across knees after feed, rubbing back. Over shoulder , rubbing back ( I found a circular motion raiser for me). My premature baby had colic and it was a nightmare. We had infacol everywhere! Use it ( check minimum age) and also try asking your midwife/ health visitor for advice. It does end. Also annoyingly my DH had more luck burping than I did!

On another point, if you are struggling to breast feed and would like to try to do so, I found a breast feeding group really helpful. This was my first baby and I learned all kinds of stuff about different positions for baby to lie while feeding and positions for me. But if it doesn't work out for you please don't beat your self up. The important thing is that baby feeds on anything!

A friend of mine was having trouble with the Aptamil. She’s switched to something else and it’s helped.

Thanks guys. She is bringing wind up after feeds but I'm wondering if she is bringing all of it completely. Will try lying her across my knees etc - we do the normal sitting up on knees and winding, over shoulder.

Have some infacol and the other one (dentinox or whatever it's called) so will remember to alternate between the two after using it for a little while. That's good advice as I didn't know they can become immune. Thank you.

I might see how she goes for a short while longer and if it persists I will go back to SMA.

Breast feeding has been a bit of a pain. She will not latch at all and quite a lot of people have tried to get her on. Nipple shields haven't worked either so I just express a few times a day. But I'd much rather a fed baby than a hungry baby!

If she likes being held upright it could be reflux or silent reflux

IME you have to try different ways to find something that works for colic/ wind.

"Quite a lot of people"? Obviously I have no idea what you've done but if you have had tons of conflicting advice it may be stressing out both you and baby. I genuinely thought I would never feed my baby and went to two sessions of a breastfeeding clinic and it was sorted. I sat in an armchair and a lovely lady brought me a cuppa and we chatted and she helped me adjust baby while we chatted until a position was found that had my baby finally guzzling away! The second session was really just for me to show off. But a couple of friends could never feed their babies themselves. 20 years later there they are , perfectly healthy and robust young adults. So much to worry about when you are a new mum. Give yourself a pat on the back
