Falling bumping head - is there any way to avoid?

Maybe science parents will say this is par for the course but our DS is 9.5mo and is crawling and standing up, unfortunately every so often he drops backward and hits his head on the floor, screams until we give him a hug and then gets on with his day.

He can fall from sitting or standing and it's always on carpet but I'm really worried he's damaging himself. We watch him like hawks but even when he's inches away from us he still falls over. It's there anything we can do to prevent this or is this part of learning to walk that all children go through?

my youngest dd bumped her head loads falling over, and in the end we got her one of these so she wouldn't hurt her head x

Just make sure sharp corners are padded as much as possible. We ended up removing a coffee table which seemed to be a particular target, and used a soft draft excluder to pad round the edge of the slate hearth.

The falling over is part of learning to stand and walk.

I agree with pp that falling is part of learning and is inevitable. Just keep doing what you are doing and accept that occasionally your LO will get a knock. Hopefully nothing worse than a bump that requires a distraction and a cuddle.
