Nursery and health visitor

Can anyone enlighten me as to what the health visitor can share? My daughter fractured her leg before she started so of course we didn’t tell them. But health visitor informed the nursery, when they reported my daughter having a bruise on her forehead 😐

I don't think that they can share information unless its a suspected non accidental injury. Maybe ask directly why she shared the info & why she thought it was important to do so. Ask for their confidentiality policy.
When she broke her leg was there any discussion or suspicion of the circumstances being due to your dd not being supervised?

Philmitchell · 25/06/2019 20:52

Nothing like that ever discussed. Went to a&e and they missed the fracture. Was only noticed when it was reviewed 3 days later! Then returned but no further xray. Follow up with consultant who was happy etc sent a letter saying no suspicions etc.

Better to be save than sorry. People will communicate to keep your daughter safe and make sure anything concerning gets picks up sooner. If you have nothing to worry about, then you have nothing to worry about.

We share information to safeguard children.

When professionals don't share information with each other, children die it's as simple as that.

Your child is probably fine, since your posting here about it. There are thousands of children in the UK, children I see every day, who are FAR from fine. This kind of information sharing is what identifies them, gets their family support and protects them.

Be thankful that we live in a country where there is a service that cares enough about your child to follow these injuries up.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 25/06/2019 21:09

Absolutely they can share. Any professional involved with your child can share with one another. It’s the team around the child and is massively important when safeguarding children as a result of enquiries in to cases such Victoria Climbie and Daniel Pelka.

The health visitor was right to share that.

Seems odd that the HV should be able to share this without letting the parents know first. Did she let you know that she was going to share the info? I don't know whether its really reasonable without involving the parents - this isn't a child protection matter - if the HV had concerns she should be sharing it with Social services not just sharing info without informing the parents.
Its very different in our area they don't seem to give a shit about protecting vulnerable children let alone randomly sharing information

Philmitchell · 26/06/2019 14:45

I completely understand that its about protecting children, I know that we’ll all be fine etc. Its just the sharing of info that doesn’t sit right with me.

I’m surprised the HV is allowed to divulge that to nursery. I know there is a duty to share the other way round, that if nursery have suspicions they are obliged to report, quite rightly. But why should heath records of a non-suspicious injury be reported to nursery? Health records should be confidential, unless there is a good reason to share, no?

Maybe it is within the rules for such information to be passed on to people who care, and are responsible for, a child. If so, that would include nurseries and schools. It's no reflection on you, it is to ensure that anything noticed concerning a child's injury is taken seriously.
