Baby roller off bed :(

Hi all
My 10 month baby roller off the bed today - she landed onto carpet flat on her back and I would say the bed is about 2ft high. She cried for abit but then slept (o think she was tired anyway)
She was five when she woke. Will she be ok or will this cause any long term damage? I feel awful x

If she's behaving normally, I'm sure she's fine. Accidents happen.

Biancadelrioisback · 23/06/2019 20:20

Oh my DS did this, only off the sofa. It's awful and you're heart falls our your arse doesn't it.
If baby is acting normally, taking milk etc and still active when awake, id keep an eye on them. If they seem off, call 111 but be warned, they will almost always tell you to get to a hospital.

Star39 · 23/06/2019 21:12

@Biancadelrioisback yes it does! She seems ok and her normal self and I guess if she landed face up her back took the brunt of the fall?? X

I just feel so disappointed it happened. I was actually thinking the day before that I had done so well to prevent it from happening for this long!

As long as she is her normal self then just put it down to a awful experience!

My little girl fell off the bed when she was 8 months, felt like the worst mum in the world. She cried for a few mins and then was happy as ever. Took me weeks to get over it 😂😂

MustBeAWeasly · 24/06/2019 08:55

My dd fell off the changing table when she was 8 months. I was right there in front of her about to put her vest on and she just flipped. She was fine, I cried for about an hour and haven't used the table since.
I feel like it's something that's going to happen you just need to get it out of the way!

My first did at 7 months and I’d stepped out the room to wash my hands. You get a big safety lecture for that from A&E - felt I had to go as I didn’t know what hit deck first.

He also bounced his way face first onto a metal bar at the end of our bed on holiday in Switzerland at 10 months even though I was right next to him. Which pulled my A Level German out my pocket....

Neither was funny and both scared the living crap out of me but I learnt from them and moved on despite feeling crap at time. Happens to a lot of people. If you’re worried go to A&E they’ll probably monitor for four hours and ask Qs about whether baby has kept a feed down, is grumpy or doing anything unusual.

Incidentally my boy as a three year old still runs head and face first into doors and walls at nursery. Thankfully they document those incidents. Especially handy when he ran into the nursery door and gave himself a black eye.

Star39 · 25/06/2019 21:35

It does seem this happens to quite a few people and they have lived to tell the tale...
Thankyou all for putting mu mind at ease. It made me feel less of a cra* mother!
I have read a few links which talk about babies falling from a distance which is longer than their height - does anyone know the importance of this?

This happens to most parents I know. Happened to DH with one of our twins and DH cried for half an hour - DS didn’t cry at all!

My boys bang their heads at least five times a day now. They’re completely fearless. Their paediatrician told me that, if they had an injury, you’d know it - a head injury bad enough to need medical attention would cause some signs you’d notice, either in the way they’re behaving or crying. Always get checked out if you’re worried but if they seem fine then I’m sure they are fine! If they are acting strangely, moving strangely or very distressed, then see a doctor :)

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 25/06/2019 21:53

My 10 month old fell down the stairs soon after she started crawling. Took her to urgent care, they looked her over and she was fine. I asked if this kind of thing happened often and they said "not often, but it does happen". Needless to say I felt dreadful. From speaking to friends it seems that most of them have had a similar incident so I think this kind of thing must happen all the time, just most people don't visit urgent care.....

Hairwizard · 25/06/2019 22:47

My ds fell out over side of cot over reaching for wardrobe handle. The cot bed part was lowered that day!! Felt awful for ages after and took him to gp. He was fine.

FenellaMaxwell · 25/06/2019 22:53

This happens to everyone and I’m sorry to say won’t be the last time it happens to you, either.

theruffles · 26/06/2019 11:31

This happened to me when my DD was 10 months old. I turned away to put something in the wardrobe, not thinking she was anywhere near the edge of the bed, and she must have rolled over more than once. She landed on her back and had a cry but was fine. I think it makes you feel worse than they feel. I felt such an awful mother and kept her awake for a few hours just in case anything was wrong!

azulmariposa · 26/06/2019 11:35

This has happened to all babies! They are a lot tougher than we think.
As long as there's no signs of injury then there's no need to panic.

From now on you'll have to have eyes everywhere though!

anitagreen · 26/06/2019 22:13

My daughter fell down the stairs at about 9 months old she was crawling and the stair gate was left open she fell down and landed on the carpet at the bottom I was so scared I took her to a&e and she was fine but was the worst moment of my life at that time

FirstTimeToddlerMum · 26/06/2019 22:29

It's horrible when this happens but it happens to us all.

My 16 month now throws himself purposely from places for a laugh whilst screaming "eeeeeee"

Star39 · 26/06/2019 22:48

I’m glad it just hasn’t happened to me (phew) I really thought she had done some damage to herself when it happened. I thought she would have remembered and learnt from it but when I put her on the bed now (under supervision) she crawls to the edge deliberately - I may have a daredevil on my hands! X

ReturnofSaturn · 26/06/2019 22:49

Oh don't worry love. My son did this at 7 months. I froze in shock then screamed. He was perfectly fine.

Rubyduby26 · 27/06/2019 17:40

My DS has done this twice, once when he was about 8 months and once about 10 or 11 months, he is wild and still tries to do it now!! He cried for about 5 mins both times and then forgot I think most of the time it's worse for the parents than the baby! He's 15 months now and I'm sure he will do it again at some point with the way he is and he bedshares so I just make it as safe as I can! X

LoafofSellotape · 27/06/2019 17:47

Moving forward, put one hand on the baby and if you can't reach what you need with the other without letting go of the baby then the baby needs to be picked up and taken with you.

I'm sure she'll be fine, just keep an eye on her.Smile

LoafofSellotape · 27/06/2019 17:48

** and once they can roll then no sleeping anywhere they can roll off like the sofa or bed.

Rarfy · 27/06/2019 17:54

I've always been wary of the rolling off a bed because a friend did it and it stuck in my head. I ended up doing worse. Miniature dachshund tied to pram, lay flat pram, left it for literally a second to move a bin heard screaming and pram is upside down with dd laid out on the path. Blush the only thing I thought might happen when I left her is she would get kidnapped lol. Accidents happen. Straight to A&E who checked her over and informed me babies are made to bounce, humouring me thankfully. Fwiw I cried much longer than dd.
