When to stop using a baby monitor

My partner doesn't think it's necessary anymore but I still like to see little one if I wake in the night. We keep it on silent as can hear from our room anyway but partner thinks we should stop using it completely now. What age did others stop using theirs?

Hes 4, its on.

We have a tiny house but with the door closed his cry at 3 am isn't very loud really. I'd rather wake up straight away than him be crying for ages. If he consistently slept through I'd turn it off

Tigger001 · 20/06/2019 13:42

OP how old is your child ?

It doesn't really matter though, if you feel better having it on, keep it on. You said there is no volume on it anyway so it not like it disturbing you.

Our DS is 22 months, our is still on, he's napping upstairs now, and I still have the monitor with me downstairs.

dementedpixie · 20/06/2019 13:48

We used it for several years but the parent unit was downstairs rather than in our bedroom. It was more for when we were downstairs and they were upstairs in their bed

My DS is 4 and we use ours. If he woke up and needed us we wouldn't hear him with two doors shut or if wexare downstairs with the TV on.

Expressedways · 20/06/2019 16:27

DD is 2 and we still have ours but only use it if we want to go sit outside after she’s gone to bed. If she’s crying overnight we can hear her from our room. We also take it when we go visit family that have larger houses. It’s audio only though so no video (one family member we visit frequently has a house with very thick stone walls and no video monitor will stretch). If you like having it on and the sound is muted so it doesn’t disturb your DH then I don’t see the issue. Unless you haven’t mentioned that your child is 11 or something- that would be creepy!

mogtheexcellent · 20/06/2019 16:38

DD is 5 next month. Not plans to stop using it. Its a very basic model but at bedtime she can call down and we can reply without having to go up the stairs. So basically we use it as an intercom.

We are very lazy. Grin

Abigwhale · 20/06/2019 17:08

My youngest is 3 and I still use it but mostly because they share a room and if they shout loud enough to wake me up without the monitor then they wake each other. With the monitor they can just call out and I hear them. Also in an evening we can’t hear them downstairs.

DryHeave · 20/06/2019 17:11

At about 10 months we stopped using the BT audio only monitor. However, we do have a video camera in LO’s room and can look at it on our phones so I suppose we’re still using one technically at 20 months?

shhhhs · 20/06/2019 17:11

DS is only 18 months old so it's nice to know I'm not being a paranoid parent by keeping it on. I also looking forward to showing DH these replies so he can see it's the norm to have a baby monitor for a few years!

Like others we use it as an intercom in our tall house. Eldest DD is 6 and I don’t see us stopping any time soon!

Buddyelf · 20/06/2019 17:14

DD is 4 and we still use it. Like PP said we use it like an intercom mostly! But with their door shut over slightly and is in the kitchen or living room with the tele on we couldn’t hear her. House isn’t huge but we have high ceilings so the stair case is big and sound doesn’t travel down them well

IntoValhalla · 20/06/2019 17:15

My youngest is 2 and a half and we still have one in his room. He’s a bugger for turning his light on and looking at books in the middle of the night Confused

BendingSpoons · 20/06/2019 17:19

We never used one at night. We could hear fine and didn't have a video one. We just use it if we go in the garden at nap time etc. But it's not causing any harm and saves you wanting to creep in and check on them, especially if they suddenly sleep longer!

magneticmumbles · 20/06/2019 17:20

I still use it for my nearly 4 year old. He can't use the toilet independently and we're on different floors. I'll probably stop using it when he's completely dry and can toilet on his own.

AnybodysDude · 20/06/2019 17:21

I stopped at 14 months. I had bad anxiety and would feel sick if I woke up in the night to the sound of him making the slightest noise, so we had to stop it. We left his door open and our open (and downstairs doors open when we were downstairs) and we always heard him. I always woke up when he woke up, but no longer when he just made a noise.

We have an average sized 3 bed semi so not all right on top of each other either.

HJWT · 20/06/2019 17:22

18 months is way to young! DD is almost 3 and still has one, she fell out of bed the other night I only heard because of the monitor xx

GummyGoddess · 20/06/2019 17:23

Planning on using until they can come and get me. Dc1 is 2.5 and it's useful as when he's sick, which is rare, he won't cry. There's just a little voice saying 'uh oh, sick'. No way would I hear that without a monitor, and obviously I won't want to leave him covered in vomit all night.

happymummy12345 · 20/06/2019 17:24

Ds is 4 this September and we still use it. I don't see what harm it does, so I'll carry on.

happymummy12345 · 20/06/2019 17:24

Ours is a video one so we can see him

MustardScreams · 20/06/2019 17:26

I never used one, which seems I’m in the minority. I have a 2 bed terrace, so DD’s room is about 2 feet away from mine and we have our doors open. I just left her door open when she was tiny so I could hear her crying.

She shouts ‘mummy!!’ if she needs me so I never worry about not hearing her.

Nameisthegame · 20/06/2019 17:32

I’ve never had one but I co slept so would just lay next to her and do admin during naps now she’s nearly two but I live in a flat and the bedroom isn’t far from the living room so she just gets up and finds me. (I do check on her obv)

cloudyinjune · 20/06/2019 17:38

We still use it, DC is 2. We have the screen off but volume on

Pixilicious · 20/06/2019 17:42

Our DD just turned 7 and we still use it, like others have said, as an intercom mainly.

boughtnotbrought · 20/06/2019 17:53

Another baby monitor as an intercom user here. DC is 7 and we only stopped using it earlier this year as it packed in after 7 years of constant use. Now we have an Amazon Echo to replace it as an intercom.

We are also very lazy!

Dandelion1993 · 20/06/2019 17:58

I never bothered with one
