Car seat toys

Hi all, 5 month old has now taken a complete dislike to the car seat and has hysterical breakdowns in the car.
We were stuck on the motorway for 45 mins yesterday and couldn't pull over or get out as was still moving slowly and my little one screamed the whole time and made himself sick. I found it horrendous so am after any ideas/toys.
I have tried giving him a toy he can hold etc but he just drops it/not interested. He wouldn't be able to reach any toys on the bar of the car seat and it folds forward as part of the installation.
Any ideas?

Here comes my controversial comment but my boy was/can still be similar and I absolutely couldn't hack it. So I bought a holder that clips onto the headrest and put my phone on with downloaded nursery rhymes, cartoons etc. Works pretty well to distract although not completely 100% successful. A lot better than not having it though!

See that's a great idea but my 3 year old would kick up a stink that I had given the baby the phone Haha as sometimes I give her my phone to keep her from falling asleep in the car xx

Have you seen the steering wheel ones that you can clip onto a seat or pram? My DD loved that.

Ahhhh yes that is a problem haha 🙈

Would the steering wheel clip onto the handle though as he then wont be able to reach it x

My Dc spent a lot of time with a buckle toy called Bizzy although they were a little older than 5mo.
We also had something similar to this which was successful www.mothercare.com/pushchair-and-travel-toys/baby-safari-look-and-play-car-mirror/294971.html

It can clip onto the side/edges of the baby car seat I've got; I think ours was an early learning centre one.

Ds loves his nuby teething ring in the car. £2.99 from Aldi.

I bought this for my 4month old DD - best tenner spent yet, and the sounds are not actually that irritating---- Grin

Do you have one of those mirrors that attaches to the rear seat headrest so that you can see him in the back?

I realised that the mirror meant that not only can I see DD but also means she can see stuff (including me). Otherwise all they can really see at that age is the backs of the car seats which must feel weird.

Yeah I have a mirror. I will have a look at these toy ideas thank you, very stressful with a screaming baby in the back when you can do nothing about it x

We had the exact same thing with our now 6month ds. We have this board thing that hangs from the head rest which has three dangling toys he can hit or chew. One crinkles, one rattles and the other is a mirror. It also has rollers for his feet but his legs can't reach yet! Been a game changer for us! Google tafftoys they are sold on amazon, argos and boots etc. There's a selection of designs (we have the penguin/ice cream cone one). Some play music but we didn't fancy that!

theruffles · 18/06/2019 09:27

Would it be an idea to change his car seat? I had to do this with my DD when she about 4 months old. We had a Cosatto car seat which she hated and would cry every time we put her in it. I brought the Joie 360 Spin and it's been a game changer for her - no more crying!

Hes in his infant carrier and would rather keep him in it for as long as possible, purely because of safety and putting it on the wheels etc x
