Being sick after formula feed

Hi all, I have an almost one year old who has been breastfed exclusively up till now. Over the last week or so he has had 3 formula feeds and has been sick during the day after each of these. He's not unwell in himself, he just keeps throwing up little bits which is very unusual for him.

I was planning on continuing with formula occasionally so I could have the odd lie-in and for when he's at nursery but now I'm not so sure. I find pumping difficult as I don't get a lot but will persevere if it's the only option.

He has had no issue with dairy previously and eats yogurt and cheese regularly.

Is there anyone here who might know what's causing this or able to please give me some advice?

TIA

Could you be feeding him too much? It happens with mine when they aren't burped properly but at that age he shouldn't need burping. Could you try a different formula? Might get on better with a different one. Also, sometimes the ready to feed doesn't agree with them, but the powder milk is fine or vice verse

If he's almost a year could you just try him on whole cow's milk? Would save you changing things again in a few weeks, not too mention the money saving and not faffing about with sterilising.

Could it be that he is used to drinking at breast speed and is now chugging the bottle far faster?

If be tempted to try an open/soppy cup of cows milk, to calm the flow.

Defiantly what others have said try cows milk by one year old they don't need formula and it is a faff having to sterilise bottles not to mention cost when at that age they don't tend to drink as much of the milk as when they were little look up bump baby and beyond NHS guidelines on how much formula at that age they should be having it's a rough guide but will help you know whether or not the three bottles is too much

Mine did this and it was a sign he was dairy intolerant.

Yoghurt and cheese gave him heart burn but pure cows milk or formula made him vomit.

Thank you for your replies, I'll probably give cows milk a ho next.

@Iggly oh no, I hope it's not that. He did have really bad silent reflux when he was little. If you don't mind me asking if it ever went away and what helped?

If he's nearly one does he need the milk in the day? My daughter only had breastmilk at that age - if we were together she fed lots but if I was at work she just drank water and had normal food. I never really got on with pumping so I didn't bother. It sounds like you're not trying to wean him as such just as pump less?

Iggly · 15/06/2019 07:31

@sqirrelfriends ds also has silent reflux.

We gave calcium enriched oat milk instead when he got to 1 but I also breastfed until he was 2. No soya as he reacted to that too.

He outgrew it by about 6/7, but still doesn’t like cheese/milk much now - he’s 9.

*had not has

I’d try cows milk, we formula fed but ditched it at 12 months for blue milk

Definitely ditch the formula. They don't need it at this age. Focus on giving him less milk and more solids if he's not eating a lot of solids right now.

My boys both had reflux with formula but no other visible reactions to other sources of dairy. So it could be a reflux issue. Or he could just be having too much.

Both my kids were weaned early and formula fed, but by a year they were only having a bottle in the morning before breakfast and night before bed. They were well established on three meals a day.
