Anyone get annoyed with interfering MIL

So my daughter is 7 months old. She has pureed veg that I prepare myself. When we go for a roast I keep being questioned as to why she cant have some of the roast (mashed up). I havent said anything but I dont want my baby having the home made gravy , when its full of chicken juice , flavourings and salt. So yesterday my little girl had finished her veg I broght with me. Then MIL gives her some mash and puts gravy on it and says there thats better than vegetables..
Uhhh just irritates me . Shes 7 months old she only needs healthy foods, she has a life time to have all of these other things!

Then last week she insisted I gave her chocoalte mouse. I put a teent bit on a spoon for her to have , of course my little girl loved it. And MIL said ' give me more mummy '. I said no that time. Shes just a baby 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ sorry for my rant

At 7 months he can have up to a gram of salt but if you give formula that has salt in so often only leaves you about 0.5 gram to play with.

There’s about that in a slice of bread (not all) or if you give cheese etc. So seems silly to allow gravy at that age. At 18 months we sometimes allow a tiny bit of gravy as long as he doesn’t go over his 2 grams a day (increases to this at 1 year)

OP I experienced the same thing from both my mil and my step-mil and it was so frustrating - my husband used to step in and say "no she's not having that" which made it easier. I know they didn't like what I fed her (and so if it was anything remotely "exotic" they used to have a fit) but I stuck with it and ignored them and now she's a really adventurous healthy eater (three years old) and she will eat anything (she recently asked me for stilton and olives!). So I think just be polite but do what you are happy and comfortable with - you're the mum!

Agreed with everyone else. At 7 months she should be fine with mashed up chicken, veg and potato. We used to get very low salt gravy and just add a tiny bit to loosen it all up, but hot water would do the same job, if your MIL's gravy is particularly salty.

This is a good source of information about weaning:

Which is not to say that you are still perfectly within your rights to feed your baby how you like. 'This working for us right now, but thanks for your suggestion' is a good phrase to have up your sleeve :)

I did BLW with my dd2 and was amazed at how well she did! Very little gagging and didn't choke once, they have chokin reflexes so i wouldn't worry so much about that. That being said, if you only want to give her pureéd veg then that is completely fine. Breastmilk/formula is their main source of nurtition for the first year. Food before one is just for fun. I'd also tell the MIL to butt out! Mine was very much against BLW but considering she was MY baby, i chose to do it MY way

Whether or not your baby could/should have potatoes and gravy is beside the point I think (I'm with you on the gravy, I am very careful with salt) - it's your baby, not MILs, so you need to learn how to tell her that and then shut your ears to all her helpful suggestions!

I have had to do the same with a very dramatic MIL who thinks there's danger lurking everywhere and seemed to get anxious about everything baby related - I'm following current advice, I know what I'm doing (even when I don't), relax and step back MIL!

Baby will be fine with some chicken, mash and veg - one of my friends did traditional weaning and blended up a meal and then made it lumpier and lumpier over the weeks. We did BLW and I loved it but appreciate there's a fear factor! FWIW we had our first real gagging incident today where I though I should do something - my DS is 16 month old!

You're doing a great job, but try to relax, your little one will be fine.

My MIL gave my son at 5 months old a chip to suck on from the chippy. Not only is it greasy but he wasn't ready to be weaned! It made my blood boil and of course my husband didn't say a word..

Namechangeymcnamechange11 · 14/06/2019 12:16

I wouldn't give an under 12 month old gravy - far too much salt! They should only have a limited amount as their kidneys can't handle it. More so if you're giving them formula, supermarket bread etc. There's more salt in those things than you'd think.
