Milk - quantities and timings - for 1 year old

My PFB DD will be 1 soon. At the 10 month check up, HV confirmed cow's milk in her sippy cup can totally replace he formula in bottles.

At the moment she has 6oz when she wakes at 7am and 6oz before bed at 6.45 with water throughout the day. Breakfast is at 8am, lunch at midday and dinner at 5pm.

Will I give her 6oz when she wakes and before bed, and do I warm the cow's milk up? Or fridge cold will be OK?

She uses a munchkin cup for water, is that OK for milk?

Help!

Munchkin cups are not great for teeth. I bet your dentist will say no to them. Cold milk from the fridge is fine as long as she is happy with it.

Do you think she is hungry when she wakes during the night?

Munchkin cups are better for teeth than spouted or cups with teats.

Even better are doidy cups which are tilted making it easier for younger children to drink from them. Dd had a doidy for milk from 1 and munchkin for water and has been fine. She’s 2.5 now and drinks wonderfully out of glasses etc, makes life much easier not having to carry around endless drinking cups and can just buy a glass of water in a cafe/restaurant.

Why aren’t they good for teeth? I hadn’t heard that before. I found that by 1 my kids were pretty good at deciding for themselves when to drink so I just had milk available for them whenever they wanted it.

She doesn't wake in the night usually. If she does, she goes back down with a cuddle.

I'll check out Doidy cups, thanks.

So did you keep milk in their cups and have them where they could reach in the day? Did the milk not sour?

She goes to a childminder at the moment so if on waking and before bed is OK, it would make things easier for us and the childminder I think too.

I would just give cows milk at the usual times you give formula. If they take it cold that's fine. I used a free flow lidded cup e.g. tommee tippee first cup. I didn't like the doidy cup tbh

I just put a small amount of milk in dd’s cup and put more in if she wanted more. Easier than having loads of milk going to waste!

I’d give a cup of milk in the morning. If she’ll take it cold then do that, much easier! Whatever cup is fine. We use the 360 for milk purely because they are the easiest to clean. Straw cups are a pain for milk!

Before bed we have the following routine - bath (if it’s bath day), pjs, cup of milk in the living room, brush teeth, read books, bed.

My DD is a milk fiend and would drink loads, but with my DS (now 4) I just fill up his cup and if he’s done I put it back in the fridge. DD usually drains it so I don’t have that issue, but I keep her milk cup in the fridge and use the same cup for morning lunch and bedtime

And no they don’t have free access to milk all day. They get it at set times (morning, after lunch and before bed). I’m not super strict, since it’s just milk, but it’s not unlimited as my DD would drink loads and not eat.
