When did you know it was time to move toddler from cot to bed?

My dd is 27 months and is still in her cot. She's quite happy in there and sleeps relatively well. Just wondering how you knew it was time with your lo's to move them into bed?

Following this too. My LO is same age and exactly the same, sleeps fine but would be interested to know.

My plan is when he learns to climb out and it is no longer doing it’s job of keeping him in bed! I aim to keep him in there as long as possible as not looking forward to the day when he starts walking in my room in the morning and waking me up

First lo- not until 3 and a half. We read it's best to keep them in a cot until 3, tried at 3 but he didn't get on with it and we had to put the cot back up!
Second lo- 2 years, 7 months
Third lo- 22 months, though she was very advanced and copied her older brother and sister (who are only a year and two years older than her)

If your first, and they are happy in their cot, keep them in as long as possible I say!

My son is 32 months and still happy in his cot. I don't plan to move him to a bed until it starts to be a problem. We are expecting another baby in the next couple of weeks and people keep asking whether we'll move our son out so the baby can have the cot. Why?! If necessary we'll get two cots as they are easy to come by on freecycle

  1. Climbing out...

  2. Wanting to night potty train...

When they can climb out and then it becomes dangerous. Plus I think there is a stage when they just look too big to be in a cot.

Both my ds are grown up now, but we moved them from cot to bed once they started regularly managing to get out of their cots by themselves.
I don’t think there’s a set timescale - if your child still sleeps well, is comfortable, and isn’t pole vaulting out, then it’s fine to wait.
We felt the cot was no longer serving it’s purpose once the boys were getting out of it on their own.
I think (it was a while ago!), that ds2 got more agile more quickly - and we definitely didn’t panic the way we did the first time we heard the “thud” from upstairs when ds1 landed on the floor having hauled himself over the cot side!

We moved DD to a bed when she climbed out of her cot at about 9 months old and we were woken up by the sound of her crash landing on the wooden floor in her bedroom (she was ok).... she's a born acrobat though.

DS moved when he was about 2yo to free up the cot for the arrival of DD.

I don't really like seeing big toddlers in cots. Once they can walk it doesn't feel quite right to cage them...

DS went in a toddler bed at 12.5 months. Every time he rolled over and touched the cot bars it woke him up and he would pull himself up and start shouting. He's always been a crap sleeper but at least in a bed it's possible for me to snuggle up next to him and settle him back to sleep in the night.

insancerre · 10/06/2019 11:15

When she could climb out
Dd used to be quite acrobatic and climb on to the window sill or into her built in cupboard
Dh was terrified the day he left the house and looked up at her room to see her waving at him, stood on the window sill with her face pressed against the glass

BareBelliedSneetch · 10/06/2019 11:16

If it ain’t broke...

With DS we moved him when he asked for a big boy bed. (About 2.5)

With DD it was when she potty trained and was dry at night and wanted to stop wearing nappies (around 3).

Paultrybudget · 10/06/2019 11:18

We've just taken the side off DS' cot bed, he's just turned 3 because he was unzipping his sleeping bag and climbing out.

We weren't in any rush to take the side off as it's a cot bed he fits fine and taking the side off doesn't change the size of it.

It's taking some getting used to though..........

IntoValhalla · 10/06/2019 11:22

When he started climbing out!!
DC1 was in a toddler bed from about 16 months - I was heavily pregnant with DC2 and couldn’t get my massive bump over the cot sides anymore to put her in there Blush
DC2 was over 2. I didn’t see the point in rocking the boat if there was no reason to. Once he started trying to climb over the side, I converted it to the toddler bed.

Pashazade · 10/06/2019 11:23

We moved ds over at 16 months as he was climbing out of his cot. So once they are no longer safe! We got a bed guard as he rolled around quite a bit so didn't have to worry about him falling out.
