Bottle feeding- desperately seeking help

As the title states- not sure if this is the right place though.

Nearly 3 week old still doesn't take bottles well. I've tried MAM, NUK & TT bottles now, the milk literally pours out of both corners of her mouth. I'm having to double bib her as her clothes become saturated. MW & HV not overly concerned as her weight gain is good thankfully but I have no idea how many ounces she is actually having at each feed.

On top of this, I can't lay her down after any feed. I get as much wind up as I can but even an hour after feeding she can have a little bit of milk come back up or on a few occasions completely projectile vomit.
I'm currently battling with her now after a feed as she won't settle back down and having to keep her upright.

I'm so tired Brew

Has baby been checked for a tongue tie? Very severe tongue tie can make it really hard for them to take bottles. Posterior tongue ties are hard to spot and are often missed repeatedly.

If you can afford it your best bet is to get someone out to assess privately. You can look here

www.tongue-tie.org.uk/Mobile/m-index.html

For someone who covers your area (assuming you are in the UK).

We had ds snipped at 8 days and whilst we are bf the change was instant. It cost £150.

Otherwise get the midwife to refer you to an infant feeding specialist for assessment.

In the meantime you could try getting the very soft disposable teats they use in hospital? You can get them on Amazon. Before DS was snipped they were the only ones he could manage.

Good luck OP!

Agree with above. I know in our area if your baby is ff and gaining weight the nhs won’t refer you do you will have to see some one privately.

Thank you both for your replies @Sunshinegirl82 @hormonesorDHbeingadick

She hasn't been checked for tongue tie. If I'm honest, regardless of money, I'll explore everything right now in my sleep deprived state!
Will look into this tomorrow when the 5 YO is back to school 🤞🏼

How horrible for you both. We had similar and I remember the stress and the constant change of outfit. For us a few things worked and made all the difference.

  • he had tongue tie as above
  • thicker milk ie anti reflux or regular formula with carobel powder mixed in to thicken it. You need a bigger teat size but the sick stopped almost immediately. You can get cow and gate carobel off amazon.
  • infacol, not sure if you need this but our DS would arch and struggle with trapped wind but really improved after this. We keep upright for 10mins after a feed.

We also got given a baby beanbag thing. It's cosy and has a strap so baby can nap on their instead of on you (supervise obviously!)

If in a crib or moses basket you can tilt one end with books or something so baby is an a bit of an angle.

Sorry for rambling, hope something helps Flowers

I had this problem with my little one and my midwife fed her one day and realised that she was lifting her tongue up as I put the teat in so all the milk poured out the sides of her mouth. All we have to do is make sure the teat is above her tongue and then she suckles well with no mess

GreenTulips · 03/06/2019 00:25

Try the really crap brown teats they are better than the harder plastic ones

Lift her mattress up using a towel so head above stomach for naps - really helps

Have you had a look at paced feeding? It's where you bottle feed to mimic the speed of milk from the breast so baby doesn't get overwhelmed and gulp too much air also.
