Electric shock in child

No judgment please
My child is acting fine and seems fine
But I wanted making dinner and my child started to cry ( he's turning 3 next month) and I asked him what's wrong m, he pointed to an extension lead and says it hurt him. I look and wire is cut and has some wire bare ( I didn't realise this)
Could this have damaged him? He seems fine, playing fine. Has this happened to anyone else child.
Everything's been removed now, and it did trip the electric sockets to go off as the tv went off at same time as he cried. Please help..

If it had damaged his internal organs would I know about it? Would he have symptoms?

Yes you would IF YOU TAKE HIM TO BE CHECKED OUT

I think in these situations it's always better to be safe than sorry. I am sure things like this happen all the time, toddlers can get everywhere and it's hard to keep and eye on them all the time. However, if there was underlying damage, you'd be devastated that you hadn't sought medical help.

Just call 111, they won't judge you.
The only time you'd be judged is if you didn't bother checking and then something was seriously wrong. I am sure all will be fine, but don't risk it.

Op you’ve had some awful responses here. Your child will in all likelihood be fine but needs an ECG. Are there any burns to see? Check feet too (an entry and exit point for current).

I suspect 111 will redirect you to your nearest ED. Having had a quick look at the latest BMA guidance-patients who are well without serious injury and with a normal ECG can be discharged home. Some places may still do a blood test as well.

This doesn’t sound like neglect. If your child appeared otherwise well looked after and you gave me the information you wrote here I wouldn’t be referring you to SS. I do sometimes ask the health visitor to do a quick home check in cases like these.

Significantly delayed presentations do raise alarm bells with staff though.

If you’ve not already done do I suggest you take him to A&E for your own reassurance. Lots of us are parents too. We understand that stuff like this happens. No one reliable is going to give you an all clear over the internet though.

Why are you ignoring advice to get your child seen to, OP? That makes me think there’s more to this than you’re letting on...

Wolfiefan · 28/05/2019 08:20

I hope you had him checked out. And all is well.

zippey · 28/05/2019 08:24

There might be internal burns and injury which you won’t see. Best get them checked out.

How is your son OP?

When my DS was 2 or 3 he stuck a loose staple he had found under his bed into an electrical outlet that was behind and under his bed, only accessible if he crawled under the bed, and got an electric shock.

I only found out about an hour later when washing his hands before lunch. He had a black mark on his thumb extending up to his wrist. I though it must have come from a marker but it didn't come off easily. He told me he had got the mark from 'the flash'. So I had to ask him to show me what had happened. There was a big black scorch mark on the wall immediately above the outlet too. The staple was sticking out of the outlet. I tripped the fuses myself and removed the staple.

Then I rang the doctor's office and they told me to take him in. They listened closely to his heartbeat for quite a while, did an extensive amount of poking his abdomen and listening, and pronounced him ok, then lectured me about safety, AND gave him an overdue jab (he had been ill when the shot was scheduled and I had forgotten to reschedule Blush ).

I felt like the world's worst mother. But they were right about securing the outlets and keeping track of vaccinations.

PLEASE take your DS to the doctor or out of hours office. He does need to be checked.
