How do you explain guns?

DD is nearly 4 and from books/films is becoming aware of guns - eg bambi gets shot by a gun/reading Star Wars with daddy. I feel a bit uncomfortable talking about guns and the notion of killing with her when she's asks about what's going on but also want to be open and honest etc when she's asking questions. Any ideas how to respond appropriately? I don't want to encourage any fighting behaviour!

I don't like guns as toys but we have been to some museums and they had tanks and weapons, my DC is still little but I am hoping to explain what they are for, as a serious object and not for toys.
Maybe a museum will have some displays with interpretation panels that are actually aimed at children?

I really dont want him to play with them when he is older but unfortunately I can't tell as he is only little.

I might change my mind in time.

Honestly. You simply answer questions in an age appropriate way. Very soon they become aware of the news and do ask things that we find hard to answer eg (around age 6) why there was a school shooting in America and could it happen here? I didn't lie, I said it had happened but they changed the law so that guns were hard to buy.
