4 month old still hungry after 9oz

My 4 month old little boy has always been a good feeder and has slept through the night since 6 weeks. However, recently he has gone from 6oz feeds to now 8/9 oz where I am feeding him every 2-3 hours. He's not a 'big' baby but he is very long. Anyone similar? Obviously advice is not to wean until 6 months. But hes started to become very fussy throughout the day and I'm starting to worry.

Could be a growth spurt, just feed him when he’s hungry.

Milk is incredibly nutrient and calorie dense compared to say, a teaspoon of mashed broccoli. Early weaning isn’t going to fill him up anymore.

I dont know about current advice but weaned my DC at 4.5 months..long large babies&started on banana, also moved to formula as found it too exhausting to keep up,they thrived!

I think advice has advised back to 4 months for weaning? Don't quote me on that, but I'm nearly sure I read something to that effect recently.
Baby rice is good.

My baby loved the plain baby rice, or Sunshine Orange for breakfast. I have no idea what it tastes like. You can make it up with formula milk.

I tried banana&kiwi for a few days with her but she was having none of it, but she loved the baby rice. I think it's Milupa who make it.

Oh and dd was 4 months when I started food (that was the recommendation at the time). To the hour lol (PFB).

She's a hearty teenager now. No food intolerances, fit as a fiddle, no allergies (thank God).

Feeding every 2/3 hours at this age isn't unusual. There is also a massive developmental change around 4m. Often there is a sleep regression with it aswell as things like rolling /sitting up

Do some research about early weaning. You'll know if your baby is ready. You can offer things like avocado purée, sweet potato puree, banana purée or fine milled oat porridge which are actually high in calories and nutrients. You can mix them with babies normal milk and see if he fills up any better.
As long as he's over 17 weeks it's ok to try.
My ds is a huge baby and 4.5 months, however he's not ready at all for weaning but I did loads of research as I thought I might need to wean him early. He actually now is on 6oz every 3 hours in the day so his milk requirements have reduced recently. I also give him 9oz at bedtime and one 6oz night feed.

Congratulations on the night sleeping though, you are so lucky Smile

Do not wean to solids this early!! Its far too soon. Just increase his formula intake.

Have a look on the NHS website re:weaning that'll give you advice about when baby is ready. Being more hungry or interested in your food (they will be interested in anything you have in your hands) are not signs they are ready.

ItsSetInStone · 27/05/2019 09:00

Also baby rice/baby porridge is nutritionally empty, lots of people will tell you that's what they gave and their LO was fine but research for yourself suitable foods rich in vitamins and minerals needed for growth and development, baby rice and porridge will not be included!

Also, my ds went through a growth spurt/sleep regression/huge developmental leap around 5 weeks ago. He was hungry and tired and slept really badly for about a month. I think we might be just coming out of it now (fingers crossed) but extra fussiness is apparently very normal at that age. You'll notice he gets a massive head in the next week or two, making room for lots of brain development Grin

Thanks everyone for the advice. I'm going to hold off weaning for a bit longer and see how he keeps. However I've looked on the NHS website and it does state that there are signs a baby is ready to wean, i.e sitting up unsupported ( which ds basically can do for a good amount of time) being able to bring food to their mouths etc... I understand that he wont get many more calories from being weaned but I do think it might satisfy him more.

@ItsSetInStone where are you getting your information from regarding not weaning at this age? I'd be interested to read any information. (Not nhs website).
Agree regarding baby rice but oats are actually very nutritious and good for babies Smile

Our paed told us that advice is soon to change re weaning, as they’ve found that between 4 and 6 months (but no later) is best re future food intolerances/gastric issues.

She said WHO advice is likely to stay at 6 months due to risks of unsanitary food prep in third world countries, so extended breastfeeding will be better for those children.
