Newborns cough getting worse

Hi all. So I have an 8 week old baby and she started to have a light cough about a week and a half ago but this past few days she's been coughing quite a lot.
I've called the GP and they said not to worry it will go away but I am very worried just in case it's something serious and I don't want to ignore it. Does anyone have any idea why she could be coughing so much? She has been sneezing as well, so I don't know if it's a cold, just a cough or something else. It's a dry cough she has. Should I get her checked out with a GP face to face or is there anything I can do at home to soothe it?

Thanks for reading,

If you're worried, get her seen!

Don't worry mamma. Get her seen. Just say you're unhappy with how she is atm.

What's she drinking? Could it be an allergy to formula or something in your breastmilk?

BertieBotts · 25/05/2019 23:07

If you're worried I'm sure they'll be happy to see her, as she's so little.

It probably is just a cold. They take 2-3 weeks to really get better from a cold at this age IME. But you can ask about remedies if you want to. They might be able to suggest something. I've found snuffle babe to be good, you can get that from Boots.

If your worried get her seen. In my experience doctors are never unhappy to check over a baby who's ill just to make sure they are ok. Main thing to watch out for in such a young baby is dehydration.

timeisnotaline · 25/05/2019 23:16

If you’re worried, get her seen. But appreciate it’s a long weekend now so not that easy. Dehydration is one concern but oxygen is the other. If they are drinking normally and having a number of wet nappies a day they aren’t dehydrated, if they aren’t doing this then you should go to the gp but also look for dry eyes and mouth, and depressed fontanelle as other signs of concern. If their breathing is a concern get seen ASAP. If it seems too fast, or like they are working hard (the tummy just under the rib cage going up and down), but hopefully with a dry cough none of that comes into play.

Not sure what happened as you posted yesterday but always get seen face to face with a tiny baby cough. Bronchiolitis can kill.

Hi everyone thankyou for replying!

I'm going to call nhs 24 tomorrow morning to see if an out of hours GP will look at her as I don't want to wait until Tuesday because of the bank holiday.

She is drinking perfect and plenty of wet nappies and breathing is fine. Will get her checked tomorrow morning just to be safe!

Thanks again for replying, I'm a FTM and a naturally paranoid person😂

If you ring 111 they will get you an appointment with a GP.

Probably just a cold but getting her checked sounds good. I found that saline nose spray helps my DS when he has a cold and cough.

theconstantinoplegardener · 26/05/2019 12:13

Have her checked in case it's bronchiolitis. It's quite common among young babies and can be serious if left untreated.
