Best place for nappy changing table?

What room do you have your nappy changing table in if you use one? Is it useful or is it something you can easily do without?

I had a thing that sat on top of the cot for upstairs (was about £20 from Asda I Line if I remember rightly, search cot top changer) and used the floor/sofa/table downstairs. Would have been a complete waste of money here.

Would love to stick everything nappy related in the bathroom but not sure if there is space. Hubby has just told me a friend has offered us their nappy changing table which is great, saves a few quid and if it isnt used much its no loss for us and we can pass it on to someone else.

What do you think of these bins from Ikea? Would they be useful for dirty (reusable) nappies?

Minority here too. Love our changing table. My DD is 18months and I use it daily. And we’ve had it since my DS was born, so 4 years of daily use. My DH built it though, so it has lots of storage underneath and once we no longer need the changing part it will just become a dresser.

No bending, kids can’t run away, everything is right there, including their clothes stored underneath it, no poo smeared round my house. We have a foam changing pad with a fabric cover on and I have 3 so if it gets gross I just change it.

My house is all one level though so I do all nappy changes in the nursery. Would be a different story if I was going up and down stairs all day. Also my kids are totally used to it, so they stay (relatively) still. Whenever I change them on the floor or bed somewhere else it’s a nightmare with them trying to run away

I had a C Section. Ain't no way I was getting on and off the floor every time! We have one set up on top of dresser in bedroom and we repurposed a table for downstairs to have a changing mat and nappy caddy on it. When she's more mobile we will probably move to floor but she's four months and we've got a huge amount of use out of them.

littlemisscynical · 24/05/2019 20:02

We use our changing table multiple times every day. Have it downstairs. Occasionally use the bed upstairs or else the floor and he is a nightmare trying to crawl away. He doesn't do this on the changing table. He is 14 months. I love having everything to hand too. We bought the display model in the shop. I think it was £50. Money well spent.

rubyroot · 24/05/2019 20:06

First three months the change mat was in the living room. I know- yucky. Breast fed baby tho and he was changed about 10/12 times a day and couldn't be bothered to keep going up and down stairs. Now its in bedroom

rubyroot · 24/05/2019 20:09

I'm not sure why adult sht has to be in a bathroom but baby sht can be on a dining table

Because not everyone has the luxury of having space in the bathroom for a changing mat. And the baby shit tends to stay in the nappy and it goes in the bin, whereas the adult shit goes in the toilet

rubyroot · 24/05/2019 20:10

Also, I don't think anyone changes baby on the dining room table Hmm

MN opinions are certainly not representative of the people I know. We all have one and absolutely love them. So much that I have one in each child's room and have used it for almost all nappy changes from birth. Eldest is now 2.5years and just finished potty training, not had a single moment where she has rolled off or come close thankfully.

I have no back problems but when staying away from home, I do eventually feel the strain on my back after a few days so it is something I consider as essential if you have enough space. Cost wise, we picked both up for free on FB selling/Gumtree. Not a perfect match with furniture but they are temporary and we plan to give away for free once we are done.

riverislands · 24/05/2019 20:31

We used to have one permanently set up at the back of a downstairs kitchen/diner.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 24/05/2019 21:01

I used a mat on the floor with both of mine (usually in the bathroom, occasionally the bedroom/living room). The midwife was very insistent I would need one, when she did the home birth visit at 36wks with DC2, but she was a bit odd and it was just one of many things we didn’t see eye to eye on!

Chippychipsforme · 24/05/2019 21:03

We used a changing mat on top of a chest of drawers to start with but it moved to the floor as soon as he could roll. He only has nappy changes in his bedroom - very occasionally downstairs if it's urgent! We don't really have room in the bathroom and I don't fancy kneeling on a tiled floor multiple times a day.

Noloudnoises · 24/05/2019 21:07

If using disposable then nappy bins are also a waste of time. Everyone I know eventually ended up bagging poos and putting them outside the back door and then to the wheelie bin each day. I got a small plastic out door bin to live by the back door. Any bin will HUM after a days worth of poos! Don't bother. And I have been know to lob them out the window to the bin below! 😬

PerfectPeony2 · 24/05/2019 21:07

Don’t get one. Just get a big mat you can put on the floor! For me anywhere else became unsafe when DD was about 3-4 months and would roll away/ refuse to get her nappy changed. If you like then you could just put a mat on a chest of drawers while the baby is still small enough to not escape!

Noloudnoises · 24/05/2019 21:08

Oh and changing mat on chest of drawers then floor. I got two mats, for downstairs and upstairs and downstairs

Pipandmum · 24/05/2019 21:08

I was not going to go up two flights of stairs to change my baby. Changed baby on floor, sofa, bed... only used the table last thing at night after bath and first thing in the morning but could easily done without it.

Lazypuppy · 24/05/2019 21:09

Ours is in dd's room, always has been. It has 3 drawers underneath with some clothes in

Devaki · 24/05/2019 21:10

I never bothered with one. I just had a mat on the floor or I changed them on my knee.

ShallICompareTheeToASummersDay · 24/05/2019 21:11

We put ours in the nursery and loved it! I had no issue going upstairs and at least everything I needed was there. Plus the stink was kept in one room!

ShallICompareTheeToASummersDay · 24/05/2019 21:11

Not quite sure why people say you can’t use them once they roll?! I never left her on it. I was literally holding her the whole time!

Cuddlysnowleopard · 24/05/2019 21:12

DS1 I used a Marvin the floor. DS2, I just used a towel, or changed him on my knee.

Cuddlysnowleopard · 24/05/2019 21:12

Marvin??? Mat! Where on earth did that come from.

reefedsail · 24/05/2019 21:16

I just don't believe you could deal with a poonami on your lap. I can see from this thread I'm just a bit of a baby changing prude.

I'd not be changing a baby in a restaurant either, which I have seen condoned on MN.

surreygirl1987 · 24/05/2019 21:19

We have one in his room and one downstairs. Invaluable. With my bad back and knees and my baby's enormous weight there's no way I'd be able to get up and down from the floor!! Also it's useful to set everything up around the table, like nappies and wipes etc.

Dandelion1993 · 24/05/2019 21:25

Changing mat on floor and had a section. Jusy did it near to sofa so I could lean on it to get up.

Also just huck a change mat on the bed too.
