Oh crappers --- leaving the house for the big bad world (potty training advice)

So I have previously posted about contemplating potty training my DS and using the "oh crap" book. So I had some great advice on my last thread from the following @teaandbiscuitsforme @DramaAlpaca @Mamimawr sorry to list you guys but cheekily hoped you may help again 😳😳, I don't want to offend by @ing you ) was hoping for more off them and other positive fellow "oh crappers " ( wasn't sure how to copy previous thread ....fail I know)

So anyway I have finally started training my DS. We are 3 days in, day 1 and 2 naked and day 3 in shorts. He is self initiating ( shouting wee wee and running to potty and weeing or pooing and pushing his shorts down on his own, or with a little help from mummy) we have had 1 accident whilst in his shorts where he didn't quite get them down quick enough and had a dribble.

sssooooo We are going to venture out into the big wide world "nappyless" , so I was wondering if anyone had any helpful hints to a couple (of what might seem ridiculous) questions

I am going to make sure we have a poo and a big wee off DS before leaving for our walk around the block.

  1. Do I take the potty in the underneath of the pram incase he needs a wee while we are out ?
I don't fancy the red cup idea just yet, as he may start trying to wee in everyone cups 😂😂 or did people find that a good alternative

We go swimming twice a week ( it will be a week and a half into training on our next visit to the pool)
Is it too soon ?
2...Should I take the potty pool side so he can jump out if needed (will get a wee before entering pool)

3... If he shouts wee wee on motorway do we pull over on hard shoulder with potty or is that just far too dangerous ?

  1. Do I take his potty out with us to restaurant/pub/ playgroup and soft play or just hold him over the loo ? I don't want him to get a weird connection to his own potty (if that's even a thing )

I am going to continue with a nappy at nap times and bed times clearly explaining it is only as he is sleeping and as soon as he wakes, we use the potty again.

I am still keeping in mind from previous post that I should be checking the location of the loos on arriving at places, but any other little hints now I'm braving the outside world would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry if this is long winded.. Things just running around in my head. Thanks people.

  1. Yes
  2. No, don’t take the potty pool side. Babies wee in the pool all the time. Don’t worry about it.
  3. Far too dangerous. Put a puppy pad under him in the car seat.
  4. We took a potty with we were stuck taking a potty out with us for ages. I didn’t stress because the majority of her peers weren’t potty training at all.

I wouldn’t be going far at first. On day three we went for a walk and DD wanted to stop every 5 minutes to wee compared to hours normally in between due to the novelty of the situation.

I wouldn’t take a potty everywhere with you, just places where there is no easily accessible toilet. He has to get used to public toilets too.

So the pool if he says he needs to pee then get him out and take him to the loo. Part of the process is definitely them learning to tell you early enough.

We used pull ups for things like long journeys. I know it’s not advised, but it never made any difference to DS and it gave me some peace of mind

Yes definitely nappies/pull ups for nap and bed. They can’t control it while they sleep so it’s purely hormonal. My DS refused nappies quickly into potty training, but was happy enough to wear “special nighttime underpants” ie pull ups with characters on

Hello! Sounds like it's going well.

Remember to start small and sticking to places with toilets can help. We have a potette thing that we sometimes put in a rucksack if we know it'll just be using normal toilets. Or we've taken a potty in the pram if we were going somewhere a bit further from toilets (forest, farm, etc)

I wouldn't worry about the pool and places like that. He'll soon get better at being able to hold it once he realises he needs to go so the urgency to get them to the potty will get less quite quickly!

Thanks everyone, for your help (it probably won't be the last time I post on our potty training journey)

Yeah I took the potty, we went to the village shop he asked for his potty on the way back into our cul-de-sac, and had a little wee.

Our neighbour then called us in to their house, despite my warning of no nappy, my DS was happily playing out in their garden and running into their kitchen to use his potty.

I have only had him in shorts and t shirt though and he's needed a little help on occasion pushing his pants to his toes - but I figure as he is only tiny, he may need the occasional hand with his trouser especially when it's more difficult trouser, like jeans

Yeah they definitely might still need a bit of help with trousers. If DS isn't being careful (what 2yr old is careful???) he doesn't push his trousers down far enough and they get caught on the lip of the potty so I'm helping him most times at the moment. He's still in very easy trousers (mainly leggings that were too small) because his 2-3 trousers are massive with no nappy and being in full time nursery, the legging type bottoms are the easiest thing for him to push down himself. He's also refusing shorts at the moment...
