Can a baby get too chubby?

As title really - is it possible? My DD is 6 months and 18lb at last week’s weigh in, which takes her to the 75th centile. She started on the 25th at birth, crept to the 50th and is now heading upwards again. She is 25th for length; I am of Mediterranean descent so short and prone to weight gain.

She started weaning at 17 weeks due to reflux on paed advice. She took to it like a duck to water and her reflux has majorly improved. She’s now on three ‘meals’ a day (porridge for breakfast then textured purées for lunch and dinner) plus a mid-morning and mid-afternoon bottle where she is offered 6oz but usually takes about 4. Bedtime bottle goes down a treat - usually about 6oz - and then one overnight of around 3-4oz. Depending on what time this bottle occurs she may have a couple of ounces in the morning when she first wakes but this isn’t consistent.

Am I overfeeding her? At weigh in the HV gave me a load of information about healthy eating in babies and portion control. Maybe she looked at my body shape and thought we are passing on unhealthy habits! (I don’t think we are - my OH cooks everything from scratch, all fresh food for us and her)

I myself am not concerned so long as she’s healthy, however I know how hard it is for me to keep the weight off so I don’t want to set her up with bad habits....

I miss my chubby baby! She's now a skinny thing because she does not stop moving all day!!

Celebelly · 22/05/2019 09:37

My DD has gone up to 75th from 50th at 14 weeks. She is EBF on demand. She's a proper little chunk but I love her little sausage legs! She's now wearing 6-12 month leggings because the 0-6 are too hard to get over her legs Grin I think your little girl looks perfect Smile

My dad is 18lb and only 16 weeks so it doesnt sound too big tbh. And she is a chubby baby but not a monster size (yet) Grin

Hi I honestly wouldn't worry. All my babies were born small (10th, 9th and 25th centiles) and all went up to the top lines. My youngest weighed in on the 98th centile last time!

Once they start moving about they start slimming down anyway.

Mabellavender · 22/05/2019 12:01

Yes they do slim down once they start moving. My second oldest had rolls and even cellulite on his bum 😂 he soon lost it when he started walking (late ish) at 18 months. He’s lean and sporty now.

HarryHarry · 22/05/2019 17:52

Looks fine to me - I love a chubby baby! Mine was like 20 pounds at 6 months but his weight gain slowed down after that. Now at 13 months he is 25 pounds. I’m sure he will lose his jelly rolls as he starts moving more. I wouldn’t worry too much.

Thank you all for making me feel a bit better - I felt like one of those pet owners who loves their cat a little too much and ends up with a Garfield!

Experimentally, I tried seeing if she could reduce the mid-morning and mid-afternoon bottles today and have a carrot stick/piece of banana with water instead, and she was screaming for milk by 5pm so maybe I’ll leave that for the time being!

Today she has learnt to sit up completely steadily for the first time (before that she kept wriggling and losing balance) so maybe this is the first step to movement....

She looks like a young baby should and is making me so So SO broody!

dementedpixie · 22/05/2019 18:49

Don't cut milk. They need a minimum of 20oz per day up until the age of 1

sleepysleepy19 · 22/05/2019 19:39

@dementedpixie Oh, see this is why I need an actual health visitor instead of being told by two different districts that I fall under the other 😩

Well that’s great then - she has c20oz per day at the moment!

My DS was a proper Michelin man at 6 months. He even had rolls on his wrists.

He slimmed down as soon as he started walking and is now a slim almost 7 year old

Atalune · 22/05/2019 21:42

She’s LOVELY!

Looks perfectly proportioned and healthy to me! Enjoy those gorgeous squishy baby days.

Jinglejanglefish · 22/05/2019 21:43

Ooh delicious!

DD has gone from 50th centile (which she's been since birth) to 75th in the two months since we started weaning. She's definitely getting ready to crawl and move though, I think she is storing it up for that.

Shelbybear · 22/05/2019 22:08

My little girl was on 50th at birth and kept going up centiles. Was on 91st or higher I think so same number ur dd has gone up. She was so chubby and cute I loved it. All those little rolls of fat.

My dh did used to get a bit worried and saying she was too chubby and we should feed her less 😮. Health visitors never mentioned about her going up centiles. At a year old she was still quite chubby. Once she started walking though she lost it all pretty quick. Looking back at her a year ago (she's now 2) I'm always shocked at how slim she is now compared to then so try not to worry too much.

Shelbybear · 22/05/2019 22:10

Just noticed ur pic, she is gorgeous! Def not too chubby!

justasking111 · 22/05/2019 22:14

They need something to fall back on when they get sick, norovirus, chicken pox etc. all knock them back.

Pinkvoid · 23/05/2019 10:19

She looks perfect, all babies are chubby and they are supposed to be!!! She is healthy, leave her be.

Pinkvoid · 23/05/2019 10:20

Just want to add, my first three DC were born 98th centile and stayed there throughout their first year or so. Fourth DC was only 55th centile at birth which was tiny for me but by four months he was up to 95th centile which is more like it Grin.
