When is it safe to breastfeed again after heavy night out

Hi,

I'm leaving my 4 week old with her dad on Saturday to go to the races. Have been expressing so she has enough for the day/night. Not sure if I'll be home and finished drinking at tea time after races or if we'll end up in town for a few hours. When will I be safe to breastfeed the next day? I've seen it's 1 hour for each unit is that AFTER your last drink you then wait the number of hours to how many drinks you've had?

No that’s not right. You can BF whenever you like, there is no time you have to wait. It’s about the levels in your breast milk, not your blood. You’ll be fine

I think you're confusing breastfeeding with driving!

There's no time period you need to wait.

I’ve been told if you’re sober enough to hold/care for your baby, you’re sober enough to feed them. The alcohol that gets in to breast milk is negligible.

If you're capable of looking after your baby, you're ok to breastfeed.

Sorry if you already know this but just in case, at 4 weeks you will have to pump every couple of hours when you're out.

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/05/2019 18:31

Don't listen to anyone who tells you to pump and dump either. Breasts aren't bags of BM waiting to be sucked dry!

firstimemamma · 20/05/2019 18:38

The nhs advice is waiting for 2-3 hours but they do say 'could' etc so it's not set in stone.

It's all on the nhs website:

Good luck with your decision (just do what works best for you) and enjoy your night out Smile

You said it yourself.... 1 hour after each unit...depends on how much u drink

...dont know why your asking when you know the answer

MustardScreams · 20/05/2019 19:56

You don’t need to wait. The amount of alcohol in your bm even if your were paralytic is negligible.

You will need to pump though, at 4 weeks your supply is still all over the place and you risk reducing it if you don’t pump whilst there. Every couple of hours or so I would think.

Divgirl2 · 20/05/2019 20:16

Mammary glands are modified sweat glands. Want to know why they don't do roadside sweat tests for drink driving? The amount of alcohol is negligible.

Sober enough to hold the baby? Sober enough to feed the baby. Just don't get absolutely rat-arsed (not because of breast milk, just words to live by).

Oh, and take a hand pump with you - you'll need it.
