Sorry - posted too soon.

I have a 4 weeks old who is quite unsettled during the day unless being held. He is also difficult to settle at night but once asleep will sleep ok. Basically if he is awake and not being held he is crying, unless white noise is being played. I've got one of those My Hummys and if that's on he is fairly content and will sometimes drop off to sleep on his own.

Do you think this is ok? Will I have trouble 'weaning' him off it, like a dummy? I guess it's a case of whatever works but it seems strange having it blaring away all day!

Why do you need to wean him off? Lots of adults sleep with white noise, often a fan. My DP does, I've gotten used to it. A fan supposedly reduces SIDS percentages too.

My LO (16 weeks) has a rain track for sleeping, naps and night. I only introduced it for naps because he has a feeding aversion and only feeds to sleep though, so I use it to get him in the feed-sleep zone when he's raging but wont do either.

Also, not being put down is common at 4 weeks. My LO wouldn't be put down until about 10 weeks, day or night lol. Lots of people will say get a sling, and they really are a lifesaver, especially for reflux or colic babies :) I only recently stopped wearing mine all day every day as he no longer needs it to sleep.

Good luck!

White noise is fine as it's what he would have heard when he was inside you. We've got an app and continually have waterfall/rain sounds playing at night as it's the best one for us to sleep to (currently playing as I type) and assume once he goes into his own room he will either not need it or we will just continue to put it on. It's no biggie because you just press go on the app, doesn't need you to do anything like if you were swaying or driving them around or continually putting their dummy back in for them to settle. If he's really over tired and struggling to settle then the hair dryer noise comes out as that sends him to sleep quick but it's more annoying to listen to for us... Does your thing have different sounds, so you could select one that you like?

For what I'd worth, mine is 10 weeks and the difference between now and 4 weeks is huge on the sleep front. The turning point was around week 6/7 for us.

Don't worry about weaning him off it. Seriously, don't bother. My DD had white noise for every nap until she was 1, then she went to nursery and napped just fine without it. She's two now and I still put it on sometimes so as to protect her from her baby sister's crying in the night (she's teething, so there's a lot of that at the moment!) But she can take or leave it. It's been a Godsend to us and I'd recommend it to anyone!

We used white noise from birth, I stopped using it for naps at around 6 months then at 8 months I decided not to use it when we were away one weekend. She slept absolutely fine and we never used it again. Use the white noise it’s such an easy thing to do and wasn’t a sleep crutch long term.
