Eight week old sleeping through the night?

I know, I know, I shouldn’t complain.....

DD (first baby) is eight weeks old and for the past few nights has slept from 10pm - 5am! She was quite small for gestational age at birth (6lbs 6oz at 41 weeks) but is gaining weight well and now weighs 11.5lbs. She eats every 3/4 hours and doesn’t sleep much during the day, but at night time will conk out at about 10pm and not stir until 5am. It’s now 6am and she has fallen back to sleep after having a feed at 5am.

The only thing we’ve been doing differently is she’s now sleeping in a cot rather than a crib, and we’ve stopped swaddling her (she was breaking out of it) and put her in a grobag instead.

Apparently I was sleeping for 8/9 hours at eight weeks so perhaps she’s simply taking after me? I’m worried that she’s not getting enough to drink, but surely she would cry if she was hungry? She’s very alert and content when she’s awake.

Thanks Smile

At 8 weeks? I would be worried if she wasn’t, tbh.

I'd enjoy it while it lasts OP! As long as you're getting plenty of wet an dirty nappies. It may not last, there are a number of sleep regressions as babies grow, but fingers crossed for you! If you're worried though you try a dream feed, offer a feed while baby's asleep, they can often take milk without properly waking.

It’s quite normal for them to sleep longer stretches around 8-12 weeks. Both of mine slept through for several weeks around then. Enjoy it. Go to bed early and catch up on sleep. It doesn’t usually last and the nights around 4-6 months can be particularly hell ish. Unless you’ve been advised to wake to feed due to weight issues, there’s no need to worry about her not feeding during the night.

DS was similar at this age (now 16 weeks), then 11 weeks hit and his sleep has been hellish ever since, waking every 1-2 hours throughout the night. Don't think I ever appreciated how good I had it until it was gone, so my only advice would be to enjoy it while it lasts Smile

My DD had her first through the night sleep at 8 weeks. She's pretty much carried on ever since.
I attribute this to luck, nothing we did!

PolarBearBubbles · 13/05/2019 16:51

@Myfoolishboatisleaning worried if an 8 week old wasn't sleeping though the night?!

Funniest thing I've read today.

Mines did bit.only because her jags through her off so badly. She's now over 5 months and loves playing let's fight our sleep and smile all day despite the fact I'm knackered game.😂😂

If your baby is feeding and sleeping and appears well then there's no issue! Enjoy!

ShutTheFridgeUp · 13/05/2019 16:58

Just enjoy it! My DS slept through (occasional wake ups for dummy) from about the same age and still does at 8 months. My DD still doesn't consistently sleep through at 5.

SherlockSays · 13/05/2019 17:00

They do sleep a lot as newborns - DD was the same, until the 4 month sleep regression hit Sad she's 10 months now and never been the same!

londonloves · 13/05/2019 17:01

Munson started sleeping through from about 2200 to 0500 from six weeks. I think enjoy it f weight gain, nappies etc all fine.
It went totally to rat shit at 11 months ish though and is still very variable at 19 months, so don't get lulled into a false sense of security!

DD was like this till two weeks ago (11 weeks). Now she still sleeps well for her age but not 10 hour stretches like before!

SingingSands · 13/05/2019 17:05

My first did this, which was obviously brilliant. She kept it up and never regressed.

But then the second child never slept for longer than 2 hours. I was a shell of a woman for 4 years.

Uv got a sleeper 😀 enjoy it!!!

Mine started doing 11pm to 7am at 6 weeks old, I felt like I was sleeping forever after all the night feeds before 😂

They still have bad nights though when they won't go to sleep for some reason or wake up at 3am and refuse to go back to sleep so just enjoy what sleep u get. It's all normal.

AbbyHammond · 13/05/2019 20:41

My youngest three slept 11-7 from 6 weeks....until 4 months Grin

lalaloopyhead · 13/05/2019 20:48

Enjoy it! My first DD slept through from 6 weeks...for a while! Once teething started I would frequently end up on the sofa while pushing her with my foot while she was inconsolable in her pram. She was a terrible at sleeping anywhere unfamiliar too which made holidays a nightmare.

She is nearly 20 now and has no bother sleeping. Hopefully your baby stays a sound sleeper Op.

My boy slept through the night from 4 weeks old! I remember freaking out as I thought there was something wrong with him. My NCT friends we're so jealous. It doesn't last though so enjoy it now!! At 6 months old my son's sleep went dreadful... waking every hour or two! Only last night for the first time in a month did he manage a decent night (just one wakeup, not bad considering his bed time is 6:30pm these days!). My advice... don't expect it to last forever, make the most of it while it does last, and don't tell too many new parents in real life as the sleep deprived ones will hate you! 👍 also bear in mind their napping habits change and that can affect night sleep so it does change.

surreygirl1987 · 13/05/2019 21:02

Also... can't help but feel that @Myfoolishboatisleaning is confused??!

yummychocolate · 13/05/2019 21:22

DS1 didn't sleep through until he was 4 years old so enjoy it Smile
