Toddler haircuts for boys

I have a 2 year old DS with fast growing hair. His hair looks like this after 6-8 weeks, but usually could do with a trim and tidy up after 2 weeks.

He has woken up this morning with really knotty bed hair on the back of his head.

I've never settled on a style of haircut for him, and it often ends in a good cut with no particular style.

Has anyone had short back and sides on a toddler? I dont want him to look ridiculous but at least it will grow quick.

My little one went to the hairdressers for the first time at 10 months old and had short back and sides. We now do it ourselves (18 months old) and do a better job than the hairdresser! Had loads of people compliment his hair, gets trimmed every 2 weeks as his hair is so thick and fast growing.
Go for it!! Smile

How do you do it yourself? YouTube and practice?

I'd love to cut it myself.

I have a 2 year old too, not gonna recommend any styles as my DS hasn't ever had a hair cut lol.

His hair took ages to grow in and he had such short fine hair for the first year so his hair doesn't cover his eyes or anything but it is long in the back. I just can't bring myself to get his gorgeous ginger curls cut!

But lots of kids around DS's age including some boys in his preschool have the long on top and short back and sides and it does suit them (my nephews are 3 and 6 and both have this hairstyle) It can look quite smart and definitely good for management as you only have the top bit to deal with.

I think your lad would suit it. Go for it, like you said his hair grows fast so if it doesn't suit then you can always choose a different style after it has grown out.

Thanks MummyBear. I think I'll go for it if only to tame his bed hair. If I don't like it it will only be a month until it grows out.

I get my son’s hair cut pretty short these days. It’s quite fine and flyaway and looks a mess in the mornings if it’s too long. He hates getting it brushed.

I actually love it short though, I think it looks really smart.

I cut my partner's hair and it is very easy and quick, only about 5 minutes to do the main bit excluding finding missed long hairs and cutting them individually. Toddler hair will probably be quicker still. I imagine you could just put a kids youtube video on to keep him still long enough.

With an electric hair shaver, you just set the comb to a medium number and go all over in the opposite way to the hair growth. Then set the comb to a smaller number and go up the neck and above and next to the ears. If the comb numbers are close to each other you don't need any special skill to blend them in (if you want quite long hair on top them hairdresser is best). For extra tidiness you can remove the comb and cut a line on his neck (go downwards in case he wriggles at the wrong moment!)

And if you make a mistake you can always give him a buzzcut in worst case scenario. He's too young to notice or get teased :)

Clippers, we normally use a number four then some proper hairdressers thinning scissors to thin the top as his hair is very thick. Honestly really quick and easy to do.

Since the ages of 8 months we have been getting DS the same hair style as DH, pretty much short back and sides, as its readily styled. We've been taking him to the barbers that DH has always visited.
